While I thought this film started out well, about racial identity and inter-racial dynamics on a college campus, it degenerated into a whiny I'm-such-a-victim movie. There were some good parts to it, some memorable scenes and worthwhile perspectives...... but then the overwhelming liberal whine kicks in towards the end as the director's underlying message becomes more apparent: Whites=ignorant, hateful, insensitive. Blacks=intelligent, passionate, articulate, insightful, martyrs. The scene that made it all painfully apparent was the tower-shooting scene in which a white skinhead goes blowing people away from a tower (reminescent of UT) and the black hero goes after him and confronts him on the stairwell. Soon, 3 cops come in, sees them fighting and all 3 of them decide to jump on the black guy while letting a freaky-looking white guy in military fatigues run off from a crime scene like a bat out of hell without giving him any more than a wimpy "Hey, you! Stop!". Oh, give me a BREAK! There were other subtle see-I'm-a-victim messages in the film, even ones worth watching, but this one (and at least two others) just made the entire film's slant painfully transparent. HIGHER LEARNING WAS A MOVIE THAT YOU CAN DEFINITLY GET A HIGHER EDUCATION ABOUT. HIGHER LEARNING TEACHES US HOW RACISM STILL EXISTS IN THE WORLD. HOW BLACK PEOPLE TRY TO AVOID IT BUT YOU STILL SOMEHOW RUN INTO IT. EVEN IF IT'S AT SCHOOL, THE GROC...ERY STORE, OR THE MOVIES. IT ALSO HAS HOW TEACHERS EXPECT THE BEST FROM THEIR STUDENTS. HIGHER LEARNING ALSO HAS A GREAT LOVE STORY DEVELOPING THROUGHOUT THE MOVIE. OMAR EPPS IS A PHENOMENAL ACTOR WITH GOOD CO-STARS E.G., TYRA BANKS, REGINA KING, AND ICE CUBE. THE MOVIE IS A MUST SEE! Pros: Good story, great actors

When this movie came out, people were not trying to pay attention to what John Singleton was saying. After Boyz in The Hood, folx were expecting another gang movie, and when he came with this, folks were shocked! How dare he call attention to what ...is going on college campuses?? How dare he shed light on the problems and issues that various students face?? how dare he go beyond the black/white issue and also speak on gender issues, sexuality, acceptance, etc?? This man who speaks about gangs coming again with a story about college? It didnt make much sense to many critics and that is why it went under the radar. It is still one of my favorite movies and I recommend it to anyone! Read more Less

They Hate Me Cause They Ain't Me

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Yes, there are some racial things that shouldn't be. But, that's the way life is. I'm a black woman, and I didn't like some of things that were done to the white students. But, again, that's how life is.... Cole Hauser was superb as Scott. And Michael Rappaport was stupendisly (?) great as Remy. Especially since he was just in Zebrahead, in which he's in love with a black girl. Great acting. And Laurence Fishburn- excellent.
