The third installment in John Singleton's trilogy about South Central Los Angeles, HIGHER LEARNING examines mid-1990s university politics from racial, sexual, and economic standpoints. At fictional Columbus University (where a statue of the explorer stands witness to the dominant culture's supremacy), three freshman arrive to find a campus ready to explode. Malik (Omar Epps) wavers among the influences of revolution-preaching super-senior Fudge (Ice Cube), no-excuses Professor Phipps (Laurence Fishburne), and his motivated girlfriend Deja (Tyra Banks). Kristen (Kristy Swanson), another neophyte, is thrown into sexual confusion when she meets a charismatic lesbian, while the socially inept Remy (Michael Rapaport) can only fit in with the local skinheads. The storylines cross and complicate as each character tries to discover what's right, but the potential for violence grows with every wrong choice they make. Singleton recruited an emsemble of considerable talent to flesh out the complex plot, which allows him to deal efficiently with a breadth of concerns without preaching.

User Reviews: Higher Learning (1995)

  • Overall:

    Higher Learning

This film portrayed (in an extreme manner) what life is REALLY like in a prodominately white campus for minorities. I feel that the director did a fantastic job of showing everyone that college life is rough for all, especially minority students. T...o understand this movie, you have to mentally leave your home in suburban America, where everything is peachy, and place yourself into the mind of a young black male. This is something I'm sure most people cannot comprehend. Read more Less

While I thought this film started out well, about racial identity and inter-racial dynamics on a college campus, it degenerated into a whiny I'm-such-a-victim movie. There were some good parts to it, some memorable scenes and worthwhile perspectives...... but then the overwhelming liberal whine kicks in towards the end as the director's underlying message becomes more apparent: Whites=ignorant, hateful, insensitive. Blacks=intelligent, passionate, articulate, insightful, martyrs. The scene that made it all painfully apparent was the tower-shooting scene in which a white skinhead goes blowing people away from a tower (reminescent of UT) and the black hero goes after him and confronts him on the stairwell. Soon, 3 cops come in, sees them fighting and all 3 of them decide to jump on the black guy while letting a freaky-looking white guy in military fatigues run off from a crime scene like a bat out of hell without giving him any more than a wimpy "Hey, you! Stop!". Oh, give me a BREAK! There were other subtle see-I'm-a-victim messages in the film, even ones worth watching, but this one (and at least two others) just made the entire film's slant painfully transparent. It's not about higher learning, it's about liberal preaching. Don't waste your time or money on this one. Read more Less
