High as a Kite collects some of St. Johnny's independent work (just before a major-label bidding war swept them up to DGC) -- the recordings, as one would expect, consist of the same melodic, Dinosaur Jr.-style indie-rock of the band's later releases, but with less-polished and pop-oriented songwriting and production. For those approaching the band from an indie perspective, the album might be preferable to the major-label work -- for those coming from another direction, it should seem just as appealing as the other releases.
