Harry (Henry) Thacker Burleigh
This AfricanAmerican singer and composer had little formal training during his youth but was accepted into the National Conservatory of Music. He became a friend of the then director, Antonin Dvorak. Burleigh's published works include "Jubile Songs of the USA," numerous art songs and settings of spirituals for single voices, piano and violin. Perhaps his most famous work was "Deep River."
