  • All Music Guide

This is the famous "cheese box" issue, where the CD is actually packaged in a small round wooden container just large enough to fit the disk and (circular) leaflet. While the novel packaging will likely attract attention, the orchestra's efforts are among the better releases of many that Willem Breuker has issued through the years. Although there remains a heaviness that has permeated many Breuker's large group performances, there is also some very exciting soloing and arranging. The second half of the album features a mini-opera by the leader, replete with vocals by Greetje Bijma and Breuker himself. Classical influences lie just beneath the surface, with Lorre Lynn Trytten's violin and Bijma's voice singing half-mockingly. As good a place as any for an introduction to Breuker's work, this CD should satisfy Breuker's devotees and attract new fans.
