    Had The Potentential For Greatness But in the end.... a Dissapointment

    This album could have been great. This review reflects the views of everyone i know who i have shown this album to. I heard it on MTV Leaks and i listened to the entire album three times now. This album is flat out a victim of overproduction. I d...on't know where the decision was made, but mr. mayer definetly, save for a little, abandoned his acoustic guitar. This album has great songs, great lyrics, and great singing. But where it ends is that. It isn't THAT bad, but knowing what it could have been, it is sad to listen to. The first song is a nice change, and comes off quite nicely, and the next one is good too, but you begin to ask yourself, where is the acoustic guitar, and when will it come. The John Mayer that we all came to love on room for squares, is now partly gone and replaced with a higer paid man, who is enamored with his new expensive toys, and thought to use them all for his new album. This album had potential for greatness, but it was lost in the blur of electronics and effects. For example, there is a disgustingly out of place saxophone part on the song, "come back to bed", which is a song i heard live, and i absolutely loved it. But this song was a victim of overproduction. The only song that wasnt over produced was daughters, which is very simple to the extreme. It just seems john's new producer got a little too excited. But oh well, maybe his next one will return to the sound we all love. Read more Less

    I've been an avid JM fan for a while...form listening to bootleg copies of Why Georgia and Wonderland to Room for Squares I would stand up to anyone who would put John down...but, after listening to Heavier Things - I have to say John, "you ...took a wrong turn, buddy".pick up the acoustic, go back to the bars and recapture the sound!!     Okay, I bought into the whole John Mayer thing a long time ago. Been a fan for quite some time. This CD is absolutely wonderful. What people have to realize is that as musicians change, their music will change too. Art is evolutionary. His lyrics are... poignant and heartfelt. And c'mon..with that voice the songs are that much more amazing. Definitely worth the wait!!!!!!! Read more Less

    Mayer wins again! adjusting his music stlye to more electric guitar than Room For Squares more accoustic sound. Mayer still has that irrsistable sexy, rasp of a male voice, and "his own lyrics" which should be applauded it is so rare it see...ms now a days for someone to write, sing, and perform their own lyrics.     I am completely taken aback by this album. I had such high expectations, and now that I've heard it all, I find that although I don't like the music as much as I liked "Room For Squares," John Mayer has pulled off yet another lyric...al masterpiece. The music isn't as intimate as it once was, or as soulful as it should be. As much as I liked the lyrics, I felt like this album was missing something. Read more Less

    the first thing that caught my eye was the album cover. It reminds me of the 70's Columbia/Epic rock/pop album covers such as Billy Joel and Jeff Beck (though it kinda reminds me of the Blow By Blow cover). Anyways, Mayer is not some big sell ou...t guy or whatever you might say, we've just heard No Such Thing one too many times, thanks to the "wonderful" people at Clear Channel and MTV(Viacom). As for the Dave Matthews Band comparison, all I can say is where is the fiddle??? Sorry I dont want to get Jerry Sinefield on you all, but what is the deal with comparing John Mayer with DMB, I mean really?? Nonetheless, this sounds like it's going to be a good album (heard tracks on the net). It may not be as big as Room for Squares, but who knows?     This album is definitely one of my favorites! All the songs are great, but don't expect too much acoustic on this album. It's more of an electric one (that doesn't mean he's a sellout or has overproduced, it's just a different ins...trument...he plays electric too, you know!). The lyrics, once again, are exceptional, as well as the music, and vocals. I definitely recommend this CD. It's a new sound compared to the last CD, but still great. A true fan will love it.     My earlier review I criticized Mayer for overproduction. I find this still to be my opinion, however some people who cannot correctly understand my point, criticized my review by claim I said he sold out, and that was because he decided to play elec...tric guitar more. I do not think that his use of electric guitar is a symptom of him selling our, and I also do not think he sold out. Furthermore I restate my case that his album was merely the victim of some bad overproduction. I read the AP music news review and they agreed that it was overproduced and the horns and saxophones were unnecessary additives. Just wanted to clear up the misconception that I believed electric guitar = sell out. WRONG. Read more Less
