Had The Potentential For Greatness But in the end.... a Dissapointment
, September 4, 2003Reviewer: Matt - See all Matt's reviews14 of 20 Yahoo! Users found this Heavier Things review helpful This album could have been great. This review reflects the views of everyone i know who i have shown this album to. I heard it on MTV Leaks and i listened to the entire album three times now. This album is flat out a victim of overproduction. I don't know where the decision was made, but mr. mayer definetly, save for a little, abandoned his acoustic guitar. This album has great songs, great lyrics, and great singing. But where it ends is that. It isn't THAT bad, but knowing what it could have been, it is sad to listen to. The first song is a nice change, and comes off quite nicely, and the next one is good too, but you begin to ask yourself, where is the acoustic guitar, and when will it come. The John Mayer that we all came to love on room for squares, is now partly gone and replaced with a higer paid man, who is enamored with his new expensive toys, and thought to use them all for his new album. This album had potential for greatness, but it was lost in the blur of electronics and effects. For example, there is a disgustingly out of place saxophone part on the song, "come back to bed", which is a song i heard live, and i absolutely loved it. But this song was a victim of overproduction. The only song that wasnt over produced was daughters, which is very simple to the extreme. It just seems john's new producer got a little too excited. But oh well, maybe his next one will return to the sound we all love. ... -

Users found this Heavier Things review helpful I've been an avid JM fan for a while...form listening to bootleg copies of Why Georgia and Wonderland to Room for Squares I would stand up to anyone who would put John down...but, after listening to Heavier Things - I have to say John, "you took a wrong turn, buddy".
pick up the acoustic, go back to the bars and recapture the sound!!

Pro Reviews: Heavier Things
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Don't take the title of John Mayer's Heavier Things literally. Mayer offers nothing heavy on the followup to his breakthrough hit, Room for Squares nothing heavy in the music and nothing heavy in the lyrics. No, Mayer is smooth, slick, and streamlined on his second or third album (it all depends if you count his 1999 debut, Inside Wants Out, half of which was rerecorded for Room for Squares, which itself was released in two different incarnations), playing things straight and following the blueprint his big radio hit, "Your Body Is a Wonderland," provided. The title Heavier Things does reflect his new directness, lacking the lithe playfulness that resulted in a Hank Mobley joke, of all things, for an album title last time out. That extends to the rest of the album the humor and interesting wordplay have been toned down, leaving very little ambiguity. Actually, there's little left unexplained on the record, with every song on the album spread across several grids explaining where they were written and how many beats per minute they are, breaking them down into keywords, charting what "suggested target points" on the body the song should hit (tellingly, not one track is targeted at the crotch), and even grouping the songs together by key. The latter is a bit of a mistake, since it shows that for all those jazzy major and minor seventh chords gliding by in his songs, he's keeping his songwriting pretty simple, sticking to D, E, F, G, and A, with a G minor thrown in for good measure. This, of course, is not really a problem for listeners, since most listeners don't care how a song is written as long as it sounds good, but this does confirm that he's kept things simple, concentrating on how the record sounds and feels. And, as a piece of mood music, this is really quite effective, delivering on how "Your Body Is a Wonderland" sounds, with some really nice lush, laidback textures and songs that are melodic without being truly catchy. It's music that floats through the speakers nicely and never leaves much of a lasting impression; it's how a jazzier, laidback, less adventurous, and MORoriented Dave Matthews would sound. Mayer is now more of a recordmaker than songwriter, which will undoubtedly dishearten those who liked the songoriented Inside Wants Out, but those who just enjoyed the sound and feel of Room for Squares should feel right at home. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |
