First of all, this is one of Ronstadt's most well-acheieved pieces of musical talent throughout her entire 36 year old career of recording music. "You're No Good" is one of Ronstadt's most memorable tracks. "It Doesn't ...Matter Anymore" has wonderful lyrics. "Faithless Love" adds a nice touch with a little banjo and some help from friend J.D. Souther. "The Dark End Of The Street" is her best track on this record. Ronstadt reveals her passion throughout the entire four minutes of this song. "Heart Is Like A Wheel" is heart-breaking and realistic. "When Will I Be Loved" shows strength but vulnerablilty all at the same time. "Willing" is a song about a trucker which will leave you confused yet interested. "I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You" is wonderful song-writing from Hank Williams. EmmyLou Harris sings with Ronstadt for this one. Beautiful harmony. "You Can Close Your Eyes" is the closing track which will leave you wanting more. Couldn't be a better album. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Heart Like a Wheel

  • All Music Guide

Following the same formula as her early records, Heart Like a Wheel doesn't appear to be a great breakthrough on the surface. However, Ronstadt comes into her own on this mix of oldies and contemporary classics. Backed by a fleet of Los Angeles musicians, Ronstadt sings with vigor and passion, helping bring the music alive. But what really makes Heart Like a Wheel a breakthrough is the inventive arrangements that producer Peter Asher, Ronstadt, and the studio musicians have developed. Finding the right note for each song whether it's the soulful reworking of "When Will I Be Loved," the hit "You're No Good," or the laidback folkrock of "Willing" the musicians help turn Heart Like a Wheel into a veritable catalog of Californian soft rock, and it stands as a landmark of '70s mainstream pop/rock.

Linda Ronstadt

With roots in the Los Angeles country and folk-rock scenes, Linda Ronstadt became one of the most popular interpretive singers of the '70s, earning a string of platinum-selling albums and Top 40 singles. Throughout the '70s, her laid-back pop never lost sight of her folky roots, yet as she moved into the '80s, she began to change her sound with the times, adding "new wa... Read more
