| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Renaissance has done musicologists and archivists a great service with the Heard It on the Radio series. Out-of-print and/or hard-to-find artists hide within these dusted grooves. The Clocks jump-start this compilation with all pistons popping on "She Looks a Lot Like You." Meanwhile, Australian Rose Tattoo relatives Heaven and pseudo-Missing Persons Noel the Red Wedge will never share a record again. Elsewhere lies lost rock-radio artifacts like Barry Goudreau's "Dreams" (recorded with his fellow Boston blokes) and "No More Lies" by Journey-man Neal Schon and Jan Hammer. Considering the obsolete material (one can't expect much info on Silver Condor), the linear notes at least list band personnel and songwriters: It took five people to write "Hot Cherie (later on the radio by Hardline, another Schon offshoot)?" Other big-name missing links are the BTO extensions Union and Ironhorse (blasting Randy Bachman's sublime "Sweet Lui-Louise"). Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson help Meat Loaf's Ellen Foley on the classy "What's a Matter Baby" (The last two tracks were culled from the '70s when FM really ruled, though most of these songs died in the '80s.). One man's treasure is another man's trash and there are some nuggets here for the casual listener (though you may want to program your player). Ultimately, Heard It on the Radio Volume 2 is really an enjoyable reference for students of slight pop. - Doug Stone, All Music Guide |
