This series has revived the magic of literature

    Pros: Too many to list

Cons: Waiting for the next book

I remember when I first heard of these books and wondered too what all of the fuss was about. I picked up the first one to read just out of curiousity, not really expecting that much. It was a shock to find that it was one of the best and most addict...ing books that I had ever read, and I finished it in about three hours and then drove to Wal-Mart in the middle of the night to buy the other two that were out at the time. I have now read all five books a half a dozen times, and cannot wait for this one to hit the shelves. It is reminiscent of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" books that I enjoyed as a young boy, and the first several books in the "Xanth" series by Piers Anthony that I loved as a teenager. It is the kind of magical storyline that draws you in and gives you an emotional connection with its real, complex, and beilievable characters and plots. It is a treasure of entertainment for people of all ages, and the only disappointment is that one day the series will end. Read more Less

    Wonderful Book

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 21, 2005 | 67 out of 126 found this Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince review helpful

    Pros: Mostly

    Cons: One

When the Harry Potter books began developing a devoted following, I wondered what all the hub-bub was about. As a lover of literature, I reasoned that a book about a young wizard could not possibly compare to works written by authors that I loved: J...ack London, J.R.R. Tolkien, Kate Chopin, Albert Camus, Herman Melville, etc. But then my curiosity won out, and I sat down to read one of the books; surprisingly I found myself enthralled. Rawlings brought me back to the first time I read “Little House on the Prairie” by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and “Where the Red Fern Grows” by Wilson Rawls. She brought me back to when I was six years old, and I fell in love with the cartoons “The Last Unicorn” and “The Secret of NIMH.” All of these works are different from one another, as is Harry Potter when compared to them. But they all have one essential thing in common: the ability to draw you into the story and the ability to warm your whole being.Harry Potter may not be filled with the thought-provoking symbolisms found in Melville’s or Chopin’s works, but when it comes down to the essentials, we can’t ignore Rawling’s ability to kindle that special whimsical and care-free feelings that come with youth. And those of us, such as myself, that are beyond that age of youthfulness can revel in being brought back briefly to the time when life had no worries. Truthfully, I would have to say that the last book in the series, “The Order of the Phoenix” lost a bit of the “charm” that had presented itself in the other books. The main character “Harry” seemed to be stuck in a constant flux of self-pity, and the ending left you wanting. But the book should be viewed as an entire series, and we have yet to see the final developments of Harry’s tale. Looking at it from that perspective, I am more than confident that Rawling’s will rise to the occasion and bring Harry’s story to a close that will satisfy all of her fans. Read more Less

i think everyone needs these books

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 28, 2005 | 24 out of 44 found this Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince review helpful

    Pros: LOTS

    Cons: very few

These books are amazing. I was hooked with the first chapter of the first book. Even with all of the intensity, and drama they give me a sense of comfort. When i need to get away from the world i can walk into a different one. The characters fit the ...age of teenagers. Except their lives are a little more intense, but thats the age and place that they live in. They live in war, just like we are. The one thing that i hate the most is that parents are trying to keep these books out of schools, and out of kids' hands. They think that we will suddenly believe in witch craft, and how bad that is because some characters in the story are hideous people with hideous minds. But what they don't realize is that witch craft isn't neccesarily bad, if you use it correctly. People need these books, i need them, children need them, adults need them. We need to know that "there is some good in this world." and we need to know who is on the other side of the brick wall. Read more Less

Pros: greatest piece of work i ever read

    Cons: consuming,lively and fun

I read it when I was in Africa.I never buy books, I perfer to borrow them but after that I started looking for the missed title to read.I was amazed and sooo happy to have found such a piece of gold when I least expected.Since I couldn't get a co...py to buy, I started hunting and stalking any one who had a copy I hadn't read, till they give in and give it to me.I finish reading most books in at least 22 hours but I finished the biggest size in all harry portter"s edition in 18 hours. I locked myself up till I was finished. the owner gave me a surprised look when I gave it back to her the next day,but I didn't care, I will ignore food , water, homework and what people think for Harry Portter any day. God bless J.K. Rowling for his excellent imagination and his ability to write it down.It made me laugh, cry, mad, happy and very emmotional! Read more Less

After my son read the second book in 3 days (he was 8 at the time), I decided to read one to see what he was so interested in. I was hooked after the first chapter. HP and the Half Blood Prince is the best one yet. Harry and the gang are growing up b...efore my eyes, experiencing life, love, and loss. So beautifully written. Read more Less

    Pros: Most

    Cons: Not many

The HP series is right now one of the most bought, read, prized, everything in this new decade. It has an excellent plot and its characters are carefully devised and created to keep up with the context and circumstances created in the book. The autho...r (JK Rowling) has an excellent way of writing and describing the situations in the book in a way that makes you see the events happening like in a movie. And speaking of which, even the movies have been intelligently created to conform with the greatness and grandure, if i might say, of the books. I can, with sureliness, say that the HP series and its books have changed what is children literature and it will keep on, especially with the creation of this latest volume: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. So, in my honest opinion, i would give it my full consideration to buy and read thoroughly the books in the Harry Potter series. Read more Less

    I LOVE HARRY POTTER!!!!!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 19, 2005 | 5 out of 9 found this Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince review helpful

Pros: The pro is that it inriches the minds and hearts of our youth, and it teaches adults to use their imaginations once more.

Cons: The only con is that some people just say that it's full of witchcraft, devil worshipping, and sacrifices, when they haven't even read the book!Nothing like those things are in there.Witchcraft yes,but not in the way people think.

Harry Potter opens your mind to a world of fantasy and magic. For kids, teens, and preteens,it lets you escape from reality for a little while.Away from the chores, the nagging of parents, the days labor on shoulders. It lets you relax. It lets you have f...un with your three best friends,Harry,Hermione,an
d Ron. For adults,it lets you regress to a second childhood. It can let you explore the minds and thoughts of children. It shows good verses evil.It reminds you being a kid,and enjoying school,or hating. It lets you use your imagination that is so often forgotten in adult years. I being only 15, have heard about the awful things said about the series. And I don't care what anyone says.I love Harry Potter. I can't picture my life without it,and I don't want to.....

    Pros: Everything

Cons: I WISH I HAD THE 6TH BOOK NOW!!!!!

I've read every Harry Potter book, from begining to end, My All time favorite has to be 'And the Prisoner of Azkaban' because you really get into it, and find out alot about the character, Sirius Black was my favorite character ever since... they first introduced him into the series, but i was soooo disapointed and sad that he died in year 5, such a shame.... but nonetheless, book 4, and 5 were friggin AWESOME!!!!! i really hope Sirius comes back, one way or the other..... and i've always thought that Neville would do something big, since he was the one that Voldemort was supposed to kill, you never know..... but i recameand this book to anyone who loves to read, even to people that don't like to read, it's just an AWESOME BOOK!!!!! Harry Potter Series

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 9, 2005 | 3 out of 6 found this Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince review helpful

    Pros: a lot

    Cons: a few

I really enjoyed reading the series and I couldn't wait how it would turn out in the end. Readers could identify with at least one of the characters, which makes it more addicting. However, there are times that there's so much story going abo...ut but I think that Rowling has her reasons for keeping it there. I don't know why people keep comparing it with Tolkien's LOTR; his books are of a different genre. But, in essence, both books tells you on how to approach life, that despite all the problems that might come our way, we just have to face it and that there's always help that comes your way when you need it and/or when you least expected it.
