Following the story and settings of the concurrently released feature film, and inspired by the fourth novel in J.K. Rowling's wildly successful series, the video game version of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire puts players in control of the bespectacled boy wizard and his best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. As the story goes, Harry is unexpectedly entered as one of Hogwart's select representatives in the prestigious and dangerous TriWizard Tournament, and much of Goblet of Fire's gameplay is based on events in the magical competition. Players will be challenged with winding mazes, firebreathing dragons, and duels against deadly rival wizards. While similar to earlier games in the Harry Potter series, Goblet of Fire boasts refined presentation and a more empowering control scheme, designed to give players an immediate, palpable sense the spells they cast. The game also introduces a cooperative mode to the series, allowing gamers to play together, as Harry and his friends, and accomplish goals through teamwork. ~ All Game Guide

Pros: Card system of upgrades adds depth; triwizard tournament levels mix up the gameplay style; sharable multiplayer mini-games.

Cons: Relies a little too much on replaying levels; doesn't leverage much media from the film; added minigames aren't all that compelling.

The PSP version of The Goblet of Fire is practically identical to the bigger console versions. The primary differences are the omission of the prefects' bathroom level and the inclusion of some unlockable minigames. You'll solve plenty of env...ironmental puzzles using each character's standard, context-sensitive charm spells. Cast a charm in the direction of a boulder and you'll lift it with a wingardium leviosa spell. Cast it in the direction of a fire, and your character will automatically do an aqua eructo charm to conjure a stream of water for dousing the flame. Carpe retractum (for opening gates) and herbivicus (for causing plants to bloom) are other context-sensitive charms used in the game. The puzzles you need to solve are usually fairly obvious. For example, while exploring the greenhouses of Hogwarts, you may need to use carpe retractum to pull down bridges, and herbivicus to open up lily pads that let you cross small bodies of water. Some obstacles, like extra-large boulders or flames, require two or more of the characters to simultaneously cast their charms to overcome them. The artificial intelligence controlling the other characters is smart enough to help you out when it needs to. Read more Less

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (PSP)

Like the console versions, Goblet of Fire on the PSP is a worthwhile platforming experience for Potter fans--but the newly included minigames don't add much value. Read more
