Pro Reviews: Harpist's Holiday

  • All Music Guide

In this early recording (which probably was released later), Maxwell seems to be competing with the previous leading harpist: Harpo Marx. While this is a beautiful recording with a very natural sound, the semi-classical style and arrangements constrict without helping the flamboyant, experimental soloist Maxwell. The unease and unevenness suggest a more fitting title might be "Harpist Playing Hooky." There are two originals, "Fantasy in Chopsticks" and "Harping on a Harp." One track, "Clair de Lune," later was remade for the Decca recording Let's Get Away From It All.
