Pros: Entertaining for adults as well as kids

    Cons: none

Synopsis: Set deep in Antarctica, into the land of Emperor Penguins, where each needs a heart song to attract a soul mate, a penguin is born who cannot sing. Our hero Mumble, son of Memphis and Norma Jean, is the worst singer in the world...however, ...as it happens, he is a brilliant tap dancer! Loved it!! And I dont normally like animations...it makes you laugh and cry...have tissues at the ready Read more Less

    Pros: Animation

    Cons: Racist Overtones

This movie is full of racial propaganda. Notice that all the "cool", likable penguins are African/American or Latino and the nasty penguins who give them a hard time have Scottish (White) dialects. Then we wonder why our kids grow up with r...acial issues. Read more Less

I loved this move. I thought that it was great to teach kids that there is nothing wrong with being different and having the courage to be different. More movies these says need to be pure like this.

    Penguins and Politics

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 29, 2007

Pros: The animation made everything look as if it was real, rather than computer generated.

Cons: The writers tried to validate the overly preachy storyline by covering it with about three other storylines. And the bonus features were very slim. They did little to save this movie.

Having the ability to sing, dance, play an instrument or draw and/or paint is a true blessing. This world needs the arts. Yet, when someone writes a movie based around the arts, it does not usually tend to equate into a major blockbuster. Take for in...stance, "Save The Last Dance" and "Drumline." Both focused on the arts, but did not exactly fare too well in theaters or in DVD sales. That leads one to wodner how exactly, Happy Feet did as well as it did. The movie (which is really a pseudo-musical) focuses around an "ugly duckling" of a penguin who is basically an outcast in his community of Emperor Penguins because he can't sing. Instead, he communicates through dance. That plotline is secondary, though. The real plot is a rather preachy argument about conservation and how humans are overfishing the Antarctic waters. There is a fine line between saying, "Hey there's a problem and we need to fix it", and someone preaching and pushing forcefully. The latter is what this movie, along with Al Gore's movie adaptation of his book, does. It is an argumentative movie that feels like it was written by someone from Greenpeace or one of their sympathizers. There is nothing wrong with conservation. Conservation is great. But there is a fine line between telling people about the problem and trying to mobilize them, and simply preaching. Yes, overfishing and pollution and other factors are very real in this world. There is no denying it. But preaching to the masses and pushing forcefully does nothing but push people away. During the early to mid 1990's there was a cartoon on the Turner networks called "Captain Planet and The Planeteers" that did the same thing. It painted people in general as unkowing, uncaring figures who "had ot be taught." Both that cartoon and this movie are aimed at young audiences, trying to get them to get involved. It is great that they try to get kids involved. But it is not okay when they preach to the masses rather than just explain the problem and that something needs to be done. On top of that, the writers try to validate the whole argument by covering it with an attempt at a coming of age story focusing on Mumble coupled with the mandatory, ever-present, underlying roamnce subplot. So in this movie, we have a movie that crosses, not 1, not two, not three, but FOUR different movie genres. Yet again, it makes one wonder how the movie fared so well. Usually whena movie crosses so many genres, it is bound to failure. What detracts even worse from this movie is the bouns features. The mini-dance lesson from famed tap dancer Savion Glover may very well cause a lot of parents to suddenly become bugged by their kids to take them to dance classes because they want to dance like Mumble. The placement of the classic Merrie Melodies cartoon short was useless. The only reason it was used was because of the juxtaposition of the birds. The cartoon had a singing owl, and the movie had a dancing penguin. That was the only reason the cartoon was added to the bonus features. On the upside, the animation in this movie was impressive. The amount of detail used in creating the animals and landscape of the Antarctic made it more than realistic. The same applies to the humans in the movie. There is so much detail that they look like real live people, rather than computer generated figures. The amount of work that went into creating this movie will definitely help students of the graphic arts and computer enthusiasts to really enjoy the movie. Overall, though, this movie may very well become nothing more than another part of the current "Green" movement and will be forgotten years later. Read more Less
