Pro Reviews: Hamish Imlach

  • All Music Guide

The Scottish folksinger's debut album appeared in the peak period of the U.K. folk revival. Over the next seven years, he would produce some of the greatest satirical and political folk recordings, often filled with self-deprecating irony with regard to his own abundant physical presence. While he may have been lighthearted, jovial, and staunchly political in moments, Hamish Imlach's recordings display some of the most sincere and devastating of traditional Irish songs, which can tear at the heartstrings with the tenderness of Bert Jansch, Anne Briggs, and other great interpreters. This debut album is as quirky and has as many humorous twists as a Monty Python gag, and comes highly recommended to fans of folk and traditional Irish music.
