Just the beginning of a great thing

By William  Mar 31, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this Guy review helpful

The first Guy release was a groundbreaking CD, full of fresh concepts and raw talent. Teddy Riley's abilities and Aaron Hall's range were the big reasons why this first CD was such a success. "Groove Me" and "Teddy's Jam" set the stage for years to... come. "I Like" was just an all around great jam. The best part about it is that this CD was probably a 4.7 out of 5 because it only got better with the release of "The Future" in 1990, a true 5.0. (Not to mention, they lost Gene Griffin, which let Teddy, Nasty Man, and Crazy Legs, do their own thing without restraint). Read more Less

    Pros: Great vocals and music

    Cons: None

Man, I remember dancing to this album w/ some Zodiacs and wearing a rayon pokkadot shirt. Oh and with my African medallion even tho I wasn't black. This is a classic R&B album w/ some cool slow jams.

One of the most seminal and influential releases of late '80s, Guy's self-titled debut album did more than its part to popularize new jack swing, a style that would soon become inescapable on urban contemporary radio. Teddy Riley didn't actually invent new jack swing with Guy -- he'd already gotten the ball rolling on Keith Sweat's 1987 debut Make It Last Forever -- but this album did more than any other to make it so incredibly popular in the RB world. With their tough blend of hip-hop, RB, and Gap Band-influenced funk, hits like "Groove Me" and "Teddy's Jam" defined new jack swing and served as the blueprint for countless new jack recordings in the late '80s and early to mid-'90s. One shameless Guy clone after another would pop up on urban radio, the vast majority of whom weren't even a fraction as inventive as Riley's distinctive trio. For anyone with even a casual interest in new jack, this CD is absolutely essential.

Biography

Guy

This seminal RB trio was the first group to sport the new jack swing sound, essentially traditional soul vocals melded to hip-hop beats, with credit for the genre's invention going to founder, multi-instrumentalist, and superproducer Teddy Riley. Riley formed his first band, Wreckx-N-Effect, while still a teenager, with brothers Markell Riley and Brandon Mitchell; Guy f... Read more
