I have seen this movie and Grumpier Old Men over one hundred times and I LOVE it everytime1 It is hilarious and I never stop laughing! Now that Matthau and Lemmon are both gone, it makes me want to watch the movie more just to remember how GREAT of actors they were! TERRIFIC!

    Lemmon, Matthau, Margret = Perfection

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 13, 1999

Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, and Ann-Margret give one of the best performances of their lives-- as big characters in the little town of Wabasha, Minnesota. John Gustavson (Lemmon) and Max Goldman (Matthau) are next-door neighbors, and have been at each others throats since 1938. --pulling pranks on each other at every opportunity. Both men's happy-go-lucky lifestyles of ice fishing and television is interrupted when beautiful Ariel Turax (Margret) moves in across the street. Both John & Max fall hard for Ariel, and the wooing game begins-- a deep, hilarious game of strategy & sabotage.
Wonderful casting all-around, with great supporting cast names like Burgess Meredith as J.W. Gustavson (Lemmon's 94-year-old perverse father)-- Ossie Davis as Chuck (the wise bait shop owner), Kevin Pollack as Jacob Goldman (Matthau's warm-hearted politician son), and Daryl Hannah as Melanie (Lemmon's beautiful, recently-divorced daughter).
This is most likely one of the best Lemmon/Matthau movies to date. The entire film-- from start to the end credits, (Complete with outtakes- which are now mandatory for all Lemmon/Matthau films) is pure joy.
An all-aroundheart-warming story. (and yes-- one of the two "Grumpy Old Men" DOES get the girl in the end... but don't feel bad for the other guy... HIS story starts up in "Grumpier Old Men"... the sequel.
