Once again, for the fifth year in a row, TV weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is forced to cover the Groundhog Day ceremonies in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, an assignment he truly despises. But this year something truly bizarre happens after he finishes the report: When he wakes up the next morning, ready to leave, he discovers it's February 2 all over again. He tries to tell his producer, Rita (Andie MacDowell), what's happening, but neither she nor anyone else understands; only he remembers that they've already lived through Groundhog Day. When the same thing happens the next morning, he thinks he's going insane and wreaks havoc all through the town. More and more mornings pass, all of them February 2, and all of them with an ever angrier Phil. Desperate to escape, he even tries suicide, but still another February 2 dawns. As he starts realizing that his exploits are not making time march on any quicker, Phil begins to change his behavior, performing a series of lifesaving tasks until he becomes a model citizen, hoping it will be enough to get him out of Punxsutawney forever. Along the way he learns more about the people around him--and himself--than he ever thought possible. The film is extremely well put together by director Harold Ramis, and the script by Danny Rubin and Ramis is sharp and clever. The actors--many of whom have to perform essentially the same scene over and over again, with only subtle differences--are a riot.

    Groundhog Day is WONDERFUL!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 3, 2001 | 3 out of 3 found this Groundhog Day (1993) review helpful

Groundhog Day is my favorite movie, and my wifes favorite as well. We own over 3000 movies, and yet we still watch Groundhog Day several times a year, making it one of only a handful of very special movies to us. Those who are looking only for come...dy will certainly enjoy this movie, and Bill Murrey fans absolutely MUST see it. But there is much more to this movie than comedy. It is also a wonderful portrait of human relationships, and winds up being a cute and sweet romantic story as well. All of the cast members did an excellent job of portraying the type of people their characters represented, mostly good-hearted small town everyday people. And Andie McDowell as the eventual object of growing romance comes off as a real sweet-heart. This is a story about how people can learn to love and appreciate each other if they will only forget the selfishness that makes them stupid long enough to give love a chance. Read more Less

Pros: beautiful movie that empowers you to better yourself

Cons: what cons? there are cons?? when did this happen?!?!!

what's great about this movie is it has plenty of laughs, but also something for your brain to work on. it's not entirely a comedy. some ppl don't get it, and that's something I would change if I could. my dad actually laughed during ...the part where Phil jumps to his death off the tower. I can't help misting up during that part because it's a study in what happens when you've tried everything you can think of, and it hasn't worked, and you're desperately unhappy with your life, and breakthroughs just aren't coming, and you can't see any end to the pain. if anybody still thinks that's funny, I can't help 'em.
