    great album

    Pros: flows perfectly throughtout

    Cons: a little overproduced

Best album. Has to be listened to as a whole to be completely appreciated. Not just because of the seemless transitions between some tracks, but because of the highs and lows throughout the whole thing. Mascis projects his angst through gentle jab...s, unlike the full-forced approach he decided to take on Where You Been. If I'm giving someone a Dinosaur Jr. album for the first time, this is what they're getting. Read more Less

    Circa 1990

    By Chris  Mar 17, 2001

Green Mind, the first all-new Dinosaur Jr album to appear after the infamous spilt with Lou Barlow, was released during the Spring of 1990. The timing should have been fortuitous, poised right at the cusp of the grunge onlaught. But despite J Masics'... more poised songwriting, the album, laced with rough production values and rambling song structures that still seemed to bear the stamp of the Barlow collaboration, was still too remote for audiences, so instead of becoming the standard-bearer for the alternative movement, Green Mind was subsumed by the Nirvana/PearlJam tidal wave. Shame, too: this was probably the most manically inspired album of Mascis' career. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Green Mind

  • All Music Guide

Many consider Green Mind to be a weak, uninspired effort, but Dinosaur Jr.'s major-label debut is a strong, varied album, featuring some of J. Mascis' best songwriting, as well as some of his best, most fluid guitar work. Essentially a solo effort by Mascis (Murph only appears on three tracks), Green Mind finds him stretching and expanding his traditional sonic assault with more acoustic guitars and tighter melodies. With its gentle Mellotron and lovely, sighing melody, "Thumb" stands as one of Mascis' finest songs; "Muck" is a surprisingly enjoyable stab at funk, "How'd You Pin That One on Me" is a great guitar workout, "Puke Cry" and "I Live for That Look" are impressive folk-punk, and "The Wagon" rivals "Freak Scene" in its depiction of the underground scene.

Biography

Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr. was largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie-rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J. Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largel... Read more
