The Doobie Brothers - Greatest Hits

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 13, 2006

    Pros: Best of the Best.....

    Cons: Nothing really....

Looks to be a best of the Doobies from their "Swamp Sounding" bluesey beginnings with Tom Johnston at the helm to the synth stylings of Michael McDonald's soulful voice...2 totally different sounds beginning to end, but keeps it interes...ting nontheless.... Course we got the best....The breakthrough hit "Listen to the Music"..."Long Train Running"..."Chi
    na Groove"..."Blac
k Water"...into some Michael McDonald territory..."It Keeps you Runnin" and the excellent "What a Fool Believes"...a huge FM hit, and I remember well as a 10 year old boy on the car radio coming to the big city on visits to my aunt and uncles house in Flint:-)...lol Pretty decent set of hits....all ya really need for a casual fan...the regular studio albums are good too..but this works for this thing. If you're a big fan of the Doobie Brothers and want only one CD by them, get the greatest hits CD or if you're only more into the Tom Johnston era, get the Best of the Doobies instead, but if you get this CD, you're definitely getting your money's wo...rth cause it contains all of their greatest hits from 1971-1991. Pro Reviews: Greatest Hits

  • All Music Guide

Apart from the four-disc Rhino box and an import collection, there was no comprehensive Doobie Brothers collection spanning the Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald eras alike until Rhino's 2001 collection, Greatest Hits. This, needless to say, is a welcome development, since it does have all the big songs, from "Listen to the Music" and "China Grove" through "Takin' It to the Streets" and "What a Fool Believes" to their reunion single, "The Doctor," providing an excellent introduction-cum-summary of one of the most popular singles-oriented pop/rock bands of the '70s.

Biography

The Doobie Brothers

As one of the most popular Californian pop/rock bands of the '70s, the Doobie Brothers evolved from a mellow, post-hippie boogie band to a slick, soul-inflected pop band by the end of the decade. Along the way, the group racked up a string of gold and platinum albums in the US, along with a number of radio hits like "Listen to the Music," "Black Water" and "China Grove.... Read more
