Pro Reviews: Greatest Hits, 1930-1940

  • All Music Guide

With mostly solo selections by Carter, plus a couple of Mississippi Sheiks songs, it features very fine and distinctive country-blues guitar playing and singing. Most of the songs are of the double-entendre variety -- a possible reason why he's not as well known as he deserves to be, since some blues researchers did not deem his material worthy. As with most Yazoo releases, the liner notes include various guitar tunings and chord progressions for each song -- fascinating for guitarists.
