| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Edith Piaf was named after the common sparrow, a scrappy species of yard bird known for its aggressive behavior, foraging habits and invasive tendencies. Piaf was the archetypal prematurely aged singing Parisian waif, a cathartic chanteuse whose theatrical exhortations of heartbreak, alienation and hidrama suicide still convey the tawdry majesty of grease penciled eyebrows and studied angst. Released in 2000, Red X's "The Great Edith Piaf" is a cheap shot 3 disc overview of recordings made between 1936 and 1947. The spare packaging comes with no written information aside from song titles, playback durations and the year during which each tune was recorded. This "best of" collection includes the jazzy "Jimmy, c'est Lui" and "J'ai Danse' avec L'amour"; a conversational patter song called "Correqu et Reguyer"; the solemn "Les Trois Cloches"; the neurotically scored "Un Coup de Grisou"; a traditional vocal harmony exercise entitled "Celine" and various squeezeboxdriven numbers, including "J'suis Mordue", "Les Hiboux", "Les Momes de la Cloche", "Un Refrain Contrait dans la Rue", "La Java de Cezique", "L'accordioniste", and that very catchy singalong hymn to selfimmolation, "C'est pour Ca".
