Synopsis: Grand Hotel (1932)
Synopis: The crème de la crème of MGM's pantheon gathers at the luxurious Grand Hotel, where "nothing ever happens." Greta Garbo is at her most radiant and poetic as the melancholy ballerina who finds a reason to dance again after she falls for the down-and-out Baron (John Barrymore) who planned to rob her. In another room a ravishing young secretary (Joan Crawford) succumbs to the advances of an arrogant industrialist (Wallace Beery). In yet another, a fatally ill office clerk (Lionel Barrymore) spends his life savings in a desperate effort to derive some pleasure from this bleak and brief existence. Downstairs at the bar, a disfigured doctor (Lewis Stone) dispenses wry commentary as people come and go. This precedent-setting ensemble piece of frothy, bubbly, tear-jerking super soap cemented the A-list status of its director, Edmund Goulding. It's an oft-imitated, never duplicated spectacle; the old Hollywood star system lighting up the sky with all the wattage at its disposal.Features: Grand Hotel (1932)

A great all-star film!
, March 5, 2001This film stars, Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Lionel Barrymore, Joan Crawford and Wallace Beery as guests at a swanky hotel in Berlin where nothing ever happens...supposedly. All you have to do is watch the first 10 minutes to see that a lot happens at this hotel. This is a terrific film with a great cast and strong performances. Be sure to see this one! Another good all-star film to watch is "Dinner at Eight" which also features John and Lionel Barrymore, along with Wallace Beery, Jean Harlow and Marie Dressler. ... -
Crawford and Barrymore....perfection
, May 23, 2000Reviewer: doves_and_woo - See all doves_and_woo's reviewsWell, to say Grand Hotel is a wonderous film with classic movie stars at the height of their heyday would be a vast understatement.
In truth never before has Mrs. Crawford's legendary star shined so gracefully, and Mr. Barrymore(Lionel) is the poster child for the sad and lonely, his role was played to perfection without the slightest hint of restaint.
As for the rest of the cast they are tyical Hollywood scenery used as pawns to showcase a otherwise sloppy plot.
The cinematography captured in glorious black and white eats at the screen the way Crawford's eyes hypotize the viewer's imagination.
To sum up the storyline "The Grand Hotel" acts as nothing much than a location for a group of high class misfits who each have a hidden desire to discover themselves, be it corruption or sheer showboating.
All and all, Grand Hotel is no "It Happened One Night" but it's mark made on a then young Hollywood can still be felt with every seduced frame inwhich it's printed from. ...
