Pro Reviews: Graduate
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews What the Beastie Boys were to the '80s and the Bloodhound Gang was to the '90s, MC Lars is to the first decade of the 21st century (which, frankly, could use a nickname a bit more catchy than "the aughts") i.e. a smarmy suburbanite equally influenced by old school and new school, hiphop and rock, and armed with enough clever pop culture references to keep a hipperthanthou indie kid chuckling to himself for hours. The Graduate finds the wisecracking MC portraying himself as the court jester of the iPod generation, thumbing his nose at The Man with ohsowitty songs such as "Generic Crunk Rap", "Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock" and "Signing Emo" that prove this Stanford alum understands you have to be smart before you can truly be a smartass. The opening "Download This Song", featuring Bowling For Soup's Jaret Reddick, uses a breakbeat the Chemical Brothers could be proud of as backdrop for a knowing deconstruction of the problems facing the music industry, with the poignant chorus, "Hey, Mr. Record Man, the joke's on you/Running your label like it was 1992/Hey, Mr. Record Man, your system can't compete/It's the new artist model, file transfer complete." The backing tracks, which borrow from influences ranging from punk and pop to techno and rap (including a selfdeprecating parody ofJayZ's "99 Problems" called "21 Concepts"), often tend towards generic laptop DJ stuff. But fans of geekhoppers like MC Paul Barman should be able to appreciate a witty lyricist who references everything from Sartre and Craigslist to Ranger Rick and Mao TseTung with tongue always planted firmly in cheek. While The Graduate may not be pumping in Jeeps on urban city streets anytime soon (read: ever), it's not difficult to imagine it providing the bonghit soundtrack for the nation's university dorm rooms. - Bret Love, All Music Guide |

Pros: Enthusiastic, Fun, Smart
Cons: Along with the 10 or 11 great tracks, a few that don't quite work
If you are reading this review, you should check out MC Lars....If you've heard his previous two efforts, Radio Pet Fencing and The Laptop EP, you know by now that he's topped himself again.
If you really appreciate the best of hip-hop, you'll appreciate and enjoy his tracks that are critical of some of the more unfortunate trends. Generic Crunk Rap nails the vapid materialism that has taken over the genre. If you like punk, check out Hot Topic is Not Punk Rock. If you are a sci-fi geek or really into literature, you'll think that Space Game might be the best rap ever. The Roommate From Hell takes the horror stories of college dorm life literally to hilarious effect. If you are part of it, you won't be able not to sing along with iGeneration, an anthem for the people who grew up with IMs, blogs, and mp3s. Download This Song and Signing Emo will explain why the music industry is dying and popular music all seems the same.
The best part is that all these tracks have serious thought behind them, but aren't stuffy, but rather infectiously fun.
Once MC Lars jumps to the top of your playlist, you'll have a greater appreciation for "The Dialogue," which will let you in on where he's coming from and how he came to create his genre, what he calls "post-punk laptop rap."
MC Lars creates goofy, exuberant, sharp witted, uniquely brilliant rhymes, the way only someone blazing his own trail can. He is a living example of exactly what his songs are all about - having fun, being yourself, refusing to sell out, and not buying in to the anti-intellectualism in our culture but rather being proud of being thoughtful.
So if you get the chance, go see MC Lars in person at one of his shows - you'll be glad that you did. And then you can buy an autographed copy of this CD from him in person for $10, or if you already downloaded all the songs, buy a t-shirt from him. ...
