A generous 27-track sampler, The Gospel Sound of Spirit Feel is a well-assembled introduction to the label's vault of classic spiritual performances. While the set's primary emphasis is on the period spanning from 1945 to 1960 -- gospel's acknowledged golden age -- it also includes a number of more traditional performances, with the spirit of the classic Dr. Watts hymns resurfacing in performances by the likes of legends including Mahalia Jackson ("Even Me," "I Gave Up Everything"), Clara Ward ("99 1/2," "The Fountain"), and Marion Williams ("The Lord Will Make a Way Somehow," "Must I Be to Judgment Brought"). Also shining its spotlight on the quartet tradition and the electrifying rockers of the Pentecostal church, this is an excellent primer for beginners.
