Greatest Album ever. By any band. Period. The rest of BNL's stuff is mediocre compared to this album. I have a thousand cd collection. But this is my favorite by far. They are (somewhat similiar) to the beatles, but the bass player is much more creat...ive then Paul. I love the Beatles too! But BARENAKED LADIES band rocks!!!!!!!!!!!! Read more Less

    Pure Pop Gem

It all went downhill after this, oh but what a trip it was. This slap-happy anti-grunge classic would still be a staple in my collection if I hadn't lost my copy to prying fingers on my work's custodial crew... Song like "Put My Hands Around Your N...eck", "The Flag", and "Blame It On Me" show a knowledge of tender subjects I didn't think Canadians possible of treating. Read more Less

Well, I'm very imperceptive. Somehow I didn't see that this is the review section for GORDON, not MAROON. I don't really know how to get the review out of here and into the right section, but I thought I better leave this message here to let people k...now that I'm at least aware of my mistake. I don't usually listen to a cd for very long, but Gordon has been in my cd player for 6 months straight. For a first album, it rocks! This is one of the best cds in the world!

    Maroon grows on you

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 1, 2001

When I first listened to Maroon, the latest album by the incredibly awesome band Barenaked Ladies, back in September when it was first released, I was a bit disappointed. Maybe I had set myself up for it by expecting too much from them, hoping they w...ould do a bit more overt musical experimentation (perhaps have some Jim or Kevin songs on there, or songs co-written by people outside of the band besides Stephen Duffy, maybe even some covers). I was also a bit crestfallen by the fact that "only" twelve songs were included, which is a small amount compared to the usual fourteen or so songs on their other albums, and since I enjoy listening to Ed's singing voice more than Steve's (although Steve's is definitely better), I was also disappointed that he only sang lead on two of those songs. But those are petty, nitpicky complaints. Because in all honesty, Maroon is the best album BNL has done since their phenomenal debut, Gordon. It fleshes out the "new" BNL sound that was first introduced on Stunt. While Stunt had a somewhat lightweight feel, Maroon is much more substantial and satisfying, with the band's trademark multi-tiered lyrics and detailed sound that smacks of expert musicianship, imagination, and creativity. All this becomes readily apparent after listening to the album several times, and while it takes a while to grow on you, if you let the album do so you'll find yourself listening to one of the greatest musical confections within recent memory. I also discovered that BNL actually DID do quite a bit of musical experimentation on this album, such as the juxtaposed strings in the middle of the raucous "The Humour Of The Situation", and the orchestral arrangements on "Sell Sell Sell" and "Tonight Is The Night I Fell Asleep At The Wheel". I also came to realize that only Steve could belt out those songs he sings lead on. I still think the album could have been longer and benefited from the inclusion of non-album tracks like "Powder Blue", "Inline Bowline", and "Born Human". At least they include "Hidden Sun" as a bonus track, and believe me, that song is one of THE best ballads that I have heard...EVER. Other great tracks are the totally unique "Pinch Me", the driving "Falling For The First Time", and the haunting "Off The Hook". Lately, "Helicopters" has become one of my favorites as well, despite the fact that it's rather vanilla as far as BNL songs go. In short, this album is awesome and any self-respecting real music fan owes it to him or herself to get it. Read more Less

great band with a dumb name

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 1, 2001

I guess that one of the reasons that it took me so long to purchase a CD by Barenaked Ladies is because the name of the band sounds so stupid. The term "Barenaked Ladies" sounds like a punchline from a joke that my Uncle would tell. The Fully Clothe...d Men did make a great debut with Gordon. It's really fun to listen to. Read more Less
