| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews The second volume of Gord's Gold follows the same tradition of the first, but in this case, it doesn't make sense, for re-recording tunes which were already in an updated sound defeats the purpose. Perhaps Lightfoot just wasn't too thrilled with the original mixes, so rather than remixing, he chose to do them over again. Included are such new versions of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," "I'm Not Supposed to Care," "Cherokee Bend" and "Race Among the Ruins," along with one new tune, "If I Should Please You," which had often been performed in concert but never recorded for an album... - James Chrispell, All Music Guide |

Pros: Some decent tracks
Cons: new versions inferior in most cases
This was a truly disheartening purchase. As a huge Lightfoot fan, I was expecting exactly what the
packaging indicates I'm buying: original recordings
of some fine material.
But only when you open the booklet do you get the startling and terribly disappointing truth: These are
lackluster re-recordings. With "Vol. 1" being primarily re-recordings one might say "you should have known" but in that case the original recordings were weak, and had been released on a previous label. With "Vol 2", the originals were just fine and needed no fooling with.
Further, the packaging only barely even mentions what's going on, and even then it's in such a cryptic manner
that it's hard to figure out if all are re-recorded,
and if each part on each song is new. Did he just layer
some new tracks over older ones on a given song ? It doesn't ultimately matter because these just aren't as good and this one went into my "trade in" pile as soon
as I heard the first four. Listless, hurried, uninspired
is my review of these.
But the clear and obvious deception is what bothers me
even more. "Vol 1" was a great idea; just compare the
stiff Liberty Records recording of " Canadian Railroad Trilogy " with the beautiful 1976 re-do. Wow ! What an
upgrade ! "Vol 2" fixed what wasn't broken and I, for one, didn't appreciate it at all. ...
