I'd like to say, Ray Liotta was awesome in this film, Robert DeNiro is always in character and Joe Pesci is in! Nobody's out of character. I like the fact that Martin Scorese changed Paul Sorvino's character because in real life, he was violent. And I tell ya, if he kept that image the same in the film, he would've taken away Tommy's whole image and the film really loses a bit much. I was a bit upset that Michael Imperioli's character "Spyder" got shot for no reason, all because he was defending himself. That really made me mad, Michael Imperioli is one of my favorite actors.

Vinny didnt put this on his list of that best movies he can think of, bzt that mostly cos he tired when he making tht list and probly forget. U make sure an know that when he bacl overt ther he go add this one as soon as he remember cos this one dam good movei. They take u theogh history of mafia - and in the rihgt order to. Vinny get confusd on that Gofdather movies - those going all over the place - still those bettr than this movie, but at least on this u always know where u are.

I don;t know if I'd say Goodfellas is THE GREATEST mafia movie of all time. Godfather is extremely good too. And it has better music. No one listens to the Goodfellas soundtrack. Goodfellas didn't instantly MAKE stars of the entire cast. Some, perhaps. But Godfather... everyone that was a major charecter walked away as a bona-fide star. But...
Other than the Goodfellas/Godfather arguement... certainly it is a great movie. What does make Goodfellas a movie that could perhaps be better than the Godfather is that the Corleone family exists only in a book. But this... this is based on a TRUE STORY. It really happened. And, the main character is (so far) still alive to enjoy seeing the story on DVD. Even if many of the people he knew that were also featured aren't. (if they were, he'd likely be dead by now)
The movie is very realistic and delves into the ugly truths of the Mafia quite nicely. It makes the lifestyle seems almost glamorous. But also strangly sickening and repulsive. All at the same time. And it shows how the scourge of drugs destroyed many a mafioso as well as many a dealer and user. As well as the paranoia that quicky came to pass and the speed and ease as which a person's life or death could be decided. Plus, how loyalty goes up much more so than it goes down.
This is a movie that no movie collection is complete without. Just be sure to get the version that is completely on a single side. Having to flip the movie at midpoint is only good if you need a break to make more popcorn.Was this review helpful? Yes - NoBEST MOVIE IN THE WORLD

Goodfellas was probably the 5th DVD I ever purchased back in 1999. From the beginning I was upset since there wasn't any special features (as many of the DVDs released at the time did). And then I realized that I had to turn it over in the middle of the movie! Now Goodfellas is not the type of movie that should be stopped to flip over.....it reminded me of the Godfather/Scarface VHS tapes that came with two tapes.
But now.......finally.......
THE SPECIAL EDITION
coming out one month from today!

Martin Scorseses best picture in my mind. This is a great addition to anyone's mafia dvd collection. However, I would rather wait for the special edition than buy this version now.
