Pros: Great message, great acting!
Cons: nothing
It is in black and white which makes it realistic and draws the viewer in. This is a great movie from start to finish and yet it is a movie with a message. The message is that the press has changed so much. Long gone are the days where a news anchor would risk his job to speak his mind, especially over an injustice. This movie is about a man who helped to bring down Senator Joseph McCarthy... the infamous senator who started McCarthyism and threw many people into jail wrongly. There are parallels between the McCarthy age and the current Bush age. This is a great movie with great acting! I highly recommend it to everyone!! It's fantastic! Plus, there are special features on the DVD that give a little more insight into the real Edward R. Murrow and the whole McCarthyism age.
I noticed some reviewers say a bad thing about the movie was that it was not completely accurate. Well of course it's not... it's a movie! It has to make money. Plus, they don't know what was said in some closed door meetings so the screenwriters and director had to make up what was said but they stayed true to the theme and the feeling of what went on in those meetings. If you want something that is as close to historically accurate as possible, read some history books on the subject.
Pros: clooney stars, and directs.
Cons: black and white images.
THis was a great George Clooney film. Great true story and well told. Only problem it didnt get any winning oscars. I was disapointed. Great film and wow what an ending! Great music score. perfect acting by all. Clooney can do it behind the camera as well as in front.
Pros: Historical Accuracy
Cons: No Cons
This is arguably George Clooney's breakout. It may not have won the Oscars it deserved, but that is only because it is a specialty film. Only those in the business and those who know anything about the business would really appreciate it. The infusion of the jazz group into the movie as both the soundtrack and part of the movie was perfect. David Strathairn looks and sounds just like Murrow. And evenClooney himself doens't overdo his supporting role. And Straithairn is so dry with his jokes, that is makes them funny. The black and white effect is fully effective. Straithairn's warning against tv's direction hits close to home with the current situation in TV.
Pros: Performances, story
Cons: inaccuracies in fact
Writer-director (and co-star) George Clooney brings us the story of Edward R. Murrow, the maverick TV journalist best remembered for talking to task the notorious Senator Joseph McCarthy, whose name name has become synonymous with the Red-scare paranoia and witch hunts that destroyed countless innocentlives in the 1950s. The film makes no bones about the relevance of its subject matter to 2005 America: the parallels between the McCarthy era and the Bush era are chillingly clear. But in the absence of anyone remotely like Murrow from television "news" today, it is often left ot courageous artist like Clooney to act as watchdogs and to speak the truth. He is to be commended not only for his sure-handed direction and fine supporting performance but also for the sheer daring of this supremely patriotic film.
