GONE WITH THE WIND is without doubt a great, great film. It has probably been seen by more people than any other film in history. I saw it for the first time in a theater in 1968, when, on its re-release, it was playing to capacity houses.
I saw it again on its re-release in 1971 and again in 1976. In both instances it was again playing to full theaters. When the movie was released in 1939, the average movie ticket was probably around fifty cents. Today, if the average price for a movie ticket is nine dollars, it is easy to calculate that GONE WITH THE WIND is the most fiscally successful film in history, and the reason for this can only be because it is one of the most beloved.
And with good reason. This is a magnificent cinematic achievement, whether by the standards of 1939 or of any other year. I would take it any day over the computer-generated nonsense being churned out today.
It is probably the most written-about movie ever, with the exception of CITIZEN KANE, so there isn't much to add to it except a few personal observations:
1. Watching the film again recently, it seemed that every single scene was perfectly written, directed and acted. There isn't a moment I would like to see discarded.
2. Many people think that the sexiest moment in movie history comes when Scarlett is shown the morning after she's been taken forcibly up the stairs to the bedroom of her husband, Rhett Butler.
3. The character of Scarlett is the most memorable heroine in film history and quite likely the greatest feminine role ever adapted for the screen from a novel. Vivien Leigh's performance is no less than spectacular. It was Miss Leigh's great fortune to have played not only Scarlett but A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE's Blanche DuBois, who is arguably the greatest role ever written for a stage play.
4. The character of Rhett Butler was probably written with Clark Gable in mind, and he brings a stalwart virility to the role which is exactly what is needed. But does it matter whether Gable or Gary Cooper (who was certainly considered) or anyone else played Rhett? Anyone who played him would certainly have been deemed the definitive Rhett.
5. Olivia de Havilland's Melanie tends to remain a stereotype of a too-good-to-be-true counterpart to Scarlett, although there are a handful of scenes when she breaks away from the mold and shows true mental and moral fortitude. In the scene where Scarlett shoots the Yankee deserter on the staircase at Tara, Melanie, appearing from above with a sword almost too heavy for her to lift, quickly assesses the situation and shouts to the family that Scarlett had just been tinkering with the gun when it went off. Later, she covers for Rhett in the scene where be brings the wounded Ashley home from the raid on Shantytown, pretending that Ashley had been with him all evening at Belle Watling's. Her best moment comes when she approaches Scarlett at Ashley's birthday party after rumors of an affair have been circulating; her face is eloquently neutral, as though she were ready for all-out warfare, and we wait for the worm to turn. It doesn't. Instead, she embraces Scarlett and asks her to help her receive her guests. She never sees the bad in anybody. She is a true lady.
6. The early scenes in the movie are relatively light and frothy as the principals emerge and the atmosphere is established. The first change of tone comes from the reading of the Gettysburg death list--and it's a shocker. From a shot of the hushed crowd waiting outside the newspaper office, the camera zooms to a list of the names of those killed in action as cries of horror penetrate the soundtrack. We see Scarlett and Melanie breathlessly scanning the list in fear that Ashley's name may be among the casualties, and then there is a shot to the mournful crowd and finally to the pitiful band who defiantly strike up "Dixie" as tears flow down their anguished faces.
7. The atmos

Pros: Everything from Vivian Leigh to the badly stereotyped black slaves
Cons: NOTHING 'T ALL
Gone With The Wind is a classic that will live through the ages -- even if it does feature some "po' black slaves who don't know no betta". It's a testament to the inequality and the skewed views on "colored people" of that day. But... it's also WICKED romantic! Clark Gable is so devestatingly masculine, and Vivian Leigh is so heartbreakingly fragile and tenacious all at the same time. She is one of the most beautiful women who've ever lived. The dresses were to die for, the boyz in suits... wowsers, and the colorization of this film really brings it home. The special features on the DVD are extensive and fascinating. I recommend this to anyone who's a romantic at heart... or anyone who appreciates flawless beauty and true femininity.
Pros: none
Cons: overrated, too long, too boring bad acting
Pros: Upliftingggg
Cons: none
I never cried in a threate. I did with Gone with the Wind, five minutes in til the end. Dick Clarke would be a no name without this performance. I sure would like to see the bloopers.
Nathan Grimsure
This classic picture about the old south comes with a grueling tale of a young, beautiful and powerful girl who uses her girly whits to do whatever she desires. Her performance is the best i've seen.
the best movie ever made for it's time. a classic A+ one to watch over & over again
Old fashion, boring, male chauvinistic, racist, and too long... Olivia is great!
I never liked old flim, but this movie is different it just take you away I'm "GONE WITH THE WIND" love this movie I think everyone is going to enjoy this movie ,even teenagers!
The movie was really good for having been created in the late 30's. I do, however, have a complaint that they cut out some very important stuff!! Scarlett had two other children before she had Bonnie and they weren't mentioned at all. I know the book is long and not everything could be included but I thought that having Beau was an important part of the story because that is why she left Tara for Atlanta in the first place. Yes, the movie was good, but the book was much, much better!!
Every time I see this movie, I find something more to love. It has its dated moments and its racial elements are controversial. Yet, its sweep, beautiful cinematography, score and actors are wonderful overall. It is a timeless film, beloved by many. The DVD is beautiful visually and the soundtrack has been wonderfully remastered into subtle 5.1 surround sound. Hopefully, Warner will see fit to reissue this title with some special features. This classic deserves such treatment...if you have a chance to ever see it on the big screen, make sure you take advantage of the opportunity. Youll never forget it.
it is my favorite movie of all time
This is one of the best movies i have ever seen! I love to watch Scarlett's life unfold; she is great! If you don't like it, it's because your too stupid to really understand it and your attention span is probably that of a fruit fly. But hey, if you watch long enough, there is a part with an explosion, you might like that....
the acting sucks, the direction is ridiclous, and hte movie is boring and overlong. without a doubt the most overrated movie ever.
I noticed a couple of reviewer gave it one star on the same day, so I suspect it's the same person. To me, Gone with the wind is one the greatest movie that has ever made. I do not know what some people talked about the greatest writer, but this is a subjective question ... but the person who wrote this, must have thought too highly of himself/herself.
Gone With The Wind is my all time favorite movie. The acting is superb in it.Vivien Leigh gives an excellent protrayal of a southern women living during the Civil War.Clark Gable is absolutely charming as the incomparable Rhett Butler. The sets are amazing for the time period. The old south is captured and represented very well in this movie.Perhaps what I love most though is the outstanding costuming. The wardrobe is perfect and represents the period exactly. The overall story line is intriguing and it is very captivating. This is and will always remain my favorite movie of all time.
