Pro Reviews: Going Down with Alice

  • All Music Guide

What do you get when you combine the creative genius of two of England's premier songwriters? Going Down With Alice is the cumulative effort between Whisky Priests members Gary and Glenn Miller, along with Blyth Power vocalist/drummer Joseph Porter. This is a totally acoustic effort characterized by the thoughtful writings of Porter and Gary Miller and their powerful and distinct lead vocals. In fact, at times Going Down With Alice evokes a friendly yet competitive showcase for their respective songwriting prowess. Both Porter and Miller seem to one-up each other with each passing song, but there is no clear-cut victor; they penned five songs each which thoroughly compliment one another. And obviously this is not a competition, merely a joint venture of artists who possess a collective mutual respect and whose careers have taken parallel paths. As is the case with virtually all Whisky Priests albums, the accordion playing of Glenn Miller is the unifying element, fusing together the div...erse moods and songwriting styles, and with Mad Dogs and Englishmen his role is similar, but in addition to that subtle contribution his arranging and instrumental skills are not to be overlooked, either. - Dave Sleger,, All Music Guide Read more Less
