Synopsis: Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956)

Originally called "Gojira" in Japan, this original Godzilla film features first-rate special effects and an unusual cast. An American newspaper reporter (Raymond Burr) documents the massive destruction caused by the 40-story high, fire-breathing monster awakened by radiation exposure. (Burr does not appear in the original Japanese version)

    Pros: Story, Atmosphere, Soundtrack

    Cons: Noticable models and puppetry

    The film that really started the kaiju onslaught, this one carries a seriousness not often found in its successors. The somber tone and carefully built atmosphere give this film a creepy feel without excessive gore or shock tactics. While the special... effects are dated now, considering the other films of the time it was actually very well done. There's a genuine plot to this one, not just the formulaic 'oh no, it's a monster, let's shoot it' that's typical of the genre it spawned. If you're a Godzilla fan, this film simply -must- be in your collection. I highly recommend it to the film-o-phile set as well. Read more Less

    ok am i the only one reviewing these?guess so.but o well.this was the first one and originally came out in japan in 1954 against nuclear weapons and crap.very good except the puppets were kinda bad.but it was probably the best of em all and the musi...c rocks too.all monster fans and G fans should own this if u say u are a g fan and dont have this..well u better cuz no g fan collection aint complete without the original Read more Less
