Movie was quite slow and rather disappointing. Was hoping for something similar to Gettyburg. Film seemed to be more based on Gen. Thomas Jackson than on the events and soldiers who served and fought.

To say it was no Gettysburg was an understatement!!! I can't really say why this movie was made. General Pickett starring as General Jackson. Thought I would have a problem with the different actors in different roles. IT DID'T MATTER!!! This movie was awful!! Watched it once, and gave it away to a thirteen year old who last year did a report on Stonewall. Glad I didn't see it in the theater. Don't waste your time...

"Gods and Generals" is a spectacle; there is no denying that. It has all the color and spectacular battle scenes of "Gettysburg." But it's not half the movie "Gettysburg" was. The movie makers tried to give us glimpses into the lives of the people behind the early Cival War battles, especially Stonewall Jackson. But rather than seeing them living their lives, we mostly see them giving speeches-- to their families, their aides, their compatriots, sometimes even to the camera (or so it seems). Because of all the pontificating, the pace of this movie falters. Pacing problems are the last thing you want in a movie this long.

Overacting to the umpteenth tee. It seemed like every scene was an attempt by a washed out actor/actress trying to win an award. How anyone can watch it past the one hour mark is beyond me. A really bad movie. I was shocked because I had heard good things about it. I would advise you not to watch this even if you are bed ridden.

When I watched this movie, I greatly anticipated a Gettysburg type of movie (simply put...great!). This however, was not worth my four hours! There are some great scenes but that amounted to only about 40 minutes of the movie. Dont waste your time with this one!!!!

I liked it so much we rented "Gettysburg". I'm ashamed to say, a so called movie reviewer in Fresno CA was so unwise as to comment on "too much about the armies fighting and the actors excellent acting was not featured enough. Duh, what did he think this movie was about. It was outstanding, and I'm a mature female who's not that crazy about war films as is my husband. I loved this film and all of the interesting features about it and the civil war.

This movie reflects the integrity and honor of an era past. It portrays a Civil War Legend..ie..Stonewall Jackson, in human form, down to earth, so to speak. The courage of those who fought in such brutal circumstance comes across in the battle scenes.

Finally, a Civil War movie that showed the true South. A fiercely independent region with elegance and class, and just as fearful of God as the North. The movie stayed very true to Shaara's book, which focused more on Stonewall Jackson than anyone else. DuVall played Lee wonderfully, and Boxleitner even did Longstreet satisfactorily. Definitely worth the time!!

The south shou rise again should have been the title. This movie is a view of the confederate army and Stonewall Jackson. With Mr. South himself, Ted Turner appearing as a confederate soldier during a celebration with General Lee and the troops. The movie give's the appearance that the south had the noble cause during the civil war and should have won based upon their religious and illustrious values, with the Union army making an appearance in the movie just to add local color. (No Pun intended)

Finally, someone made a movie that shows what true southern gentlemen are all about. The fallacy that this war was all about slavery should finally be put to rest. The war was about NORTHERN OPPRESSION!! Awesome movie.

This movie showed what really happened at the start of the war. It was about the Life and Campaigns of Stonewall Jackson. I loved it.

I've read many mixed opinions on this movie. I can understand why many would dislike this movie, but before you make up your mind, consider that the movie was based on the novel. That novel garnered critical success, so why not the movie? Granted the victories seen in the movie and read in the novel were southern victories, but that was what happened in the Civil War in the first 2 1/2 years of the war (the time period covered by the novel and the movie). The acting was great as well as the action. Of course, we also gonna focus on the characters more than the battles. Gettysburg and The Killer Angels did that and many thought they were great. Here, we find out about who these people really were. Lee, Jackson, and Chamberlain were all religious and romantic. The Confederacy wasn't as evil as they've been made out to be. All these harsh critics would understand the movie if they even studied the Civil War. Before they should say anything, they should make sure they know the material.

The American Civil War was war like none other in the history of the United States because it involved Americans fighting one another to preserve their ways of life. In the 19th Century it was totally proper to declare your love for your state as was present in the Southern States of that time. This movie did a very good job of depicting life in these United States during a very tumultous time in our history
