    Pros: excellent vocals, excellent musicianship

    Cons: none

Breezin is the first cut and it really works with Jarreau's lyrics and Benson's guitar playing. Morning is the next cut and it is an excellent instrumental version of Al Jarreau's hit and it's a perfect song to listen to on a summer d...ay while driving on a long trip. There is a version of "ordinary people" on this cd that is just outstanding with the interplay between the guitar and the saxophone is awesome on this track. This album will be put into the smooth jazz category but it is really an album of smooth jazz, pop, regular jazz, and traditional soul and if this album were made 20 years ago it would be in the top 20 on any album chart. Pro Reviews: Givin It Up

  • All Music Guide

Givin' It Up finds crossover jazz icons guitarist George Benson and vocalist Al Jarreau teaming up for a breezy, enjoyably melodic session that highlights both artists' long careers. Technically a duo album, it is Benson's first since signing with Concord Records. As such, it works as a nice reintroduction to both artists and even finds them reworking the Bobby Womack classic "Breezin'," which Benson originally covered on his 1976 album of the same name. Here listeners get Jarreau adding lyrics and vocals on a version that really evokes the classic '70s jazzmeetsRB sound that was an original hallmark of smooth jazz. In that sense, Givin' It Up is a true joy for fans of that more organic, songoriented approach to crossover music, with Benson and Jarreau digging in to such great songs as Seals Crofts' "Summer Breeze," John Legend's "Ordinary People," and Darryl Hall's "Every Time You Go Away." Also adding some unexpected fun and celebrity sheen to the proceedings is an impromptu appeara...nce by Paul McCartney, who joins in on Sam Cooke's gospelinflected "Bring It on Home to Me." Throw in appearances by trumpeter Chris Botti, vocalist Patti Austin, pianist Herbie Hancock, and bassist Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke, and Givin' It Up proves music is always fun with a little help from your friends. - Matt Collar, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

The George Benson Quartet

These days, George Benson (born March 22, 1943, Pittsburgh, PA) is often described as a commercial RB/pop singer who sometimes moonlights as a pop-jazz guitarist. But early in his career -- when Benson was still in his twenties -- the jazz world thought of him as a guitar-playing hard bop/soul-jazz instrumentalist whose primary influences were Wes Montgomery and Charlie... Read more
