10cc guitarist Eric Stewart was still recovering from a near fatal car smash when he started work on this movie soundtrack and, while it might be unfair to say that the timing could hardly have been worse, still Girls scarcely stands among his greatest accomplishments, either as a musician or a songwriter.
That said, the soundtrack (like the movie) is absolutely a child of its time, with songs like "Discollapse", "Disco Bumpin'" and "Aural Exciter" especially redolent of that sneeringly supercilious attitude towards contemporary tastes that many "serious" musicians liked to adopt when confronted with the need to write something that matched them. Occasionally a flash of the real Stewart blazes forth, usually in the shape of a pleasing guitar line, or an inflection of the vocal. But anybody who thrilled to Stewart's dayjob, even as 10cc itself wobbled towards its sad end, will be as disappointed by Girls as they were excited by his earlier output.
