Pro Reviews: Giraffes in a Hurry

  • All Music Guide

Cellist Matthew Brubeck and guitarist David Widelock join forces to create compelling modern music in these mostly duo sessions. Cello has not been utilized that much in a small group setting and rarely in a duo, but Brubeck's warm arco technique is the perfect foil for Widelock's inventive acoustic guitar. Widelock did most of the writing for this session, including the haunting "Almost April" and the lighthearted "Giraffes in a Hurry." Brubeck contributed the understated but percolating "Dobrounik." Bassist Aladar Pege is an added guest on two selections, a humorous romp through Thelonious Monk' "Hackensack" and the guitarist's funky "The Jolly Blue Giant." Even though the instrumentation is very different, fans of the Turtle Island String Quartet will connect with the music of the Matthew BrubeckDavid Widelock Duo.
