    Won't dissapoint!

By rod  Jun 7, 2005 | 3 out of 3 found this Get Behind Me Satan review helpful

Pros: It's hard, brash and unique, like all of their stuff

    Cons: A little funky

This album kicks ass! It's different from their previous work (less electric guitar and less hard vocals) but is just as creative and inventive, has a nice inclusion of bluegrass/blues/hard acoustic mixed with that awesome White Stripes style. LO...VE IT! Read more Less

    'Get Behind Me Satan'

By KHOA PHAM  Oct 10, 2006

    Pros: none

    Cons: none

Tempted as I am to do a song-by-song analysis, instead I'd like to 'paint' a general impression. The album was recorded in only a couple of weeks and sounds like it...but I mean that in the best way possible: it is refreshing in it's ...lack of studio polish/gimmickery, in it's cohesiveness (although variety is definitely present), the experimentations (Jack doing a whole song in a drippy, near incomprehensible falsetto?), clever lyrics and it has the vibrance of a performance recorded live but with the convenience of a recording studio, so it's without the annoying whistles, hoots and hollers that mar most live records. Imagine going over a friend's house, but that friend happens to be talented musician and gifted songwriter who wants to share some tunes with you--but he's a little nervous; he's worked hard enough to get his material right but not hard enough to start hating it yet. This album sounds like that. Jack White (lead singer/guitarist/pianist) bookends the album alone (fittingly, I suppose) with Loretta Lynn's "I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet)", quite nicely, and kicks it up a notch (along with drummer/vocalist Meg White) on the way there with tracks like "Denial Twist", "Little Ghost" (kinda funny; not a fave of mine, though) and lead single "Blue Orchid", which sounds like a young, bratty Prince embracing his rock side over his funk one. There are enough instant classics on The White Stripes' 'Get Behind Me Satan' to merit the price of admission. Read more Less

    White Stripes embrace change

By Cheralyn Watson  Jul 19, 2005

Pros: Incredible lyrics and music; a great album as a whole

    Cons: none

The evolution and revolution of The White Stripes... It's refreshing to find a band that has been given the time to become great. This album grabbed me from first listen. I had just finished listening to the new Coldplay album (and was feeling s...orry that they had stuck too much to the sound of their last album) when this album kicked me into high artistic gear. I read other reviews and only then realized that this album doesn't have as much guitar work as previous White Stripes albums. Needless to say, I didn't even notice their absence! I love this sound for them. There's a bit of an old country/bluegrassy sound to some of the songs and that definitely suits them. I can't wait to hear where they go next. Change is exciting. Miles Ahead of Their Peers

    By Ray  Jun 7, 2005

Pros: Diverse Instrumentation,Musical and Vocal Growth

    Cons: Can't Find Any

This CD is another step forward in The White Stripes legacy. Each release explores new ways to obtain unique sounds with sparse instrumentation. Of particular interest is the way Jack takes his vocals seriously this time out. You get the feeling Jack... and Meg were surrounded by a roomful of various instruments, and just picked up whatever was available to create their unmistakable take on rock and roll. They succeed in their effort to get some new sounds but still keep it "The White Stripes". A must have. Standout tracks : The Denial Twist, Instinct Blues, Red Rain, Blue Orchid, Take,Take,Take, The Nurse, My Doorbell. Read more Less

    White Stripes, Black Magic

    By Adam V  Jun 3, 2005

Pros: Amazing musicianship, varied styles, great album as a whole

    Cons: ?

The latest album from Detroit's White Stripes is as musically diverse a record as you can find on your store shelves. Opening with the thumping single "Blue Orchid", Meg White condtrdicts her usually minimalistic style by pounding away ...at the skins at a steady pace. The album comes to its first climax at "My Doorbell", a 1970's Motown-style jam that is irresistably catchy. The appalachian, almost rockabilly fervor of "Little Ghost" sounds like something that Jack might have wrote on the set of Cold Mountain. A piano anchors the bluesy rocker "The Denial Twist", but then settles in for a softer role on the seemingly autobiographical "White Moon". The edgy, rough, blaring, and brilliant guitar on "Instinct Blues" lets you know that even the simplest life forms on Earth can appreciate down-home rock. Overall, this White Stripes album relies more on piano than guitar, more style than straight up rock (whether it be revival or not). There's not a clear-cut best track on the album... but all together it makes for one heck of a listen. Dozens of musical styles are represented here, but somehow Jack White all makes it work. For now, It just makes you wonder... where can he take us next? Read more Less
