Truly a small wonder, the eTrex takes the best features of a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver and put them into a six-ounce package that is only four inches high and two inches wide. The result is a unit that will literally fit in the palm of your hand.

Besides its small size, mariners and outdoorsmen will likely notice the sleek design of the eTrex. All buttons are located on either side of the unit, allowing for simple, one-handed operation that won't obstruct your view of the display. In fact, the eTrex features only five operator buttons for the ultimate in user-friendly design. Thanks to its bright yellow case, the eTrex will be hard to misplace and easy to find in any boat or backpack. The eTrex is completely waterproof so it can take an accidental splash or dunk in the water and still continue to perform.

Inside the eTrex, you will find the proven performance of a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver that will run for about 18 hours on just two AA batteries. No need to worry about dense tree canopy with this unit, the eTrex will continue to maintain a tight satellite lock even while operating in forest-like conditions. The eTrex will store up to 500 user waypoints with graphic icons and boasts Garmin's exclusive TracBack feature that will reverse your track log and help you navigate your way back home. In addition, the eTrex uses animated graphics that will help you identify your marked waypoints quickly and easily.

    A Great Basic GPS

By Clifford  Sep 7, 2004 | 22 out of 24 found this Garmin eTrex review helpful

Pros: very user friendly, accurate, not intimidating

Cons: can only be used outdoors, may be too basic for the more sophisticated user

We have had our Garmin etrex at least 3 years, and it still goes on every trip, even to Grandma's. The best feature for us is that it tells us how much longer the trip will take. Hold it up in the car window, and it will track the satilights from... there. I have even tracked sattelights from a plane window (only to find that the FAA doesn't allow passengers to use a GPS on flights.) We use it in conjunction with a maps program installed in our home computer. We type in (on the maps program, not included)the address of a friend or relative whose house we haven't been to. The Maps program(again totally different software, not included) gives us the latitude and longitude of the address. We program the lat/long into the Garmin etrex, and the GPS will guide us right to their front door. We have used the etrex when traveling to visit cousins in San Diego. We live in Michigan. Oh the joys never to lose our way again!! We can also mark a waypoint of the spot we are standing at and use the Etrex to guide us back to that exact spot again. It also will show your altitude, your speed, sunrise and sunset, and how long it will take you to get to your waypoint.A couple of drawbacks: The Etrex can only be used outside, it won't be able to navigate you to the bathroom, heh heh. Like I said, I use it in the car all the time, and it will work in a plane with patience. There is no maps program that can be used with the etrex that I'm aware of. We have worked around that with the desktop version we have, but it requires some preplanning to program in destinations before you take the trip. Of course taking a laptop would take care of that issue as well. Read more Less

Great buy -works with mapping software

By GaryJ  May 10, 2005 | 11 out of 11 found this Garmin eTrex review helpful

Pros: Works great with Delorme Street Atlas, low cost

Cons: Patch antenna makes for poor reception in woods

I have used this unit for the last four years. I purchased this product to use when hiking. I found the patch antenna allowed for very poor reception with any trees overhead. I have used it for navigation in the car and when bicycling and found that ...it really works great. My only complaint is that the small display size cuts-off too many characters for roads with longer names. When roads are fairly straight, navigation is fantastic. Roads with many curves can be more challenging to interpret, but possible. I purchased a serial cable with cigarate plug and Garmin Street Atlas software. I can set my route on my computer, print any directions or maps I desire and download directions and waypoint in a couple of seconds. You can connect the unit to a laptop that is powered by an inverter to get a large screen with moving map, with both visual and audio directions. Street Atlas is relatively low cost, but by far, the best program I have found after trying many competative products. Read more Less
