Garmin StreetPilot 2610
If your travels don't take you too far, but you still need help getting from point A to point B, then the Garmin StreetPilot 2610 might be your guiding light. The 2610 is similar to its newer sibling, the 2620, with the exception of map storage. Whereas the 2620 has maps preloaded on its hard drive,... more... -

Garmin StreetPilot 2610
Overall, we loved the StreetPilot. It worked like a dream, consistently guiding us with the minimum of fuss to wherever we wanted to go. Stress-free motoring comes at a price, though £1,000 to be exact. That said, getting from A to B without a map-related paddy with your partner is worth every... more...

Pros: Color screen, voice navigation, easy to setup and use
Cons: Detailed maps are about 2 years out of date; no battery power
This is my first GPS. My boss has an older Garmin model (no color, no voice) but I was impressed enough that I started looking around. After comparing a few of the Garmin as well as their competitor's models, I felt this GPS had the most features and was the easiest to use.
My wife loved it after one day, as she often has difficulty finding unfamiliar addresses. The ability to enter a specific address and say "find" was a big selling point for her. We both liked the fact that it would recalculate a new route should you (happen) to get off of the original.
We were a bit dissappointed that the detailed maps that came with the product were about 2 years out of date. We could tell they were old because some of the "services" and "food & drink" locations listed in our hometown had long been closed.
The device only runs on AC current or from your cigarette lighter socket. A battery, while not a necessity, would have been a nice option.
If you buy a 2610, one of the first things I recommend is to go to the Garmin website and make sure your OS is up-to-date. Mine came with V2.7 of the OS, and when I upgraded it to the latest (V3.4 as of this writing), several of the original annoyances with the product went away AND several new features were added (such as an "Always Avoid this street" function).
Overall, we are very pleased with the product. It's well worth the money if you often find yourself in strange cities wondering which way to turn. ...
