    Great GPS; Lousy Radio

    Pros: GPS "position reporting" feature works well and is wonderful for use in hiking and hunting with friends

    Cons: Voice communication is poor. Customer support is poor.

    Buy the Rino for a great GPS that communicates position with other Rinos. Don't buy it for its voice communication capability, which really does stink. In the field I carry a Rino for GPS and position reporting functionality and a Cobra GMRS ra...dio for voice communications. The position reporting seems to have a range of about a mile. It's not clear to me why position reporting works at this range while voice communication is muffled at 100 yards and cuts out entirely at about 1/2 mile line of sight even on GMRS channels. Customer support is poor; Garmin Tech Support hasn't responded to the couple of e-mail inquiries I've made.Despite the half-baked radio Garmin crammed into the Rino, I buy them again based on the great position reporting feature.SUGGESTIONS FOR GARMIN: Fix the voice problem; add a 'polling' feature so I can request someone else's position (Rinos only transmit position when the user presses the 'talk' button; lobby the FCC to allow position reporting to utilize the longer-range GMRS channels.     Pros: Radio & GPS w/Mapping that can transmit your position to your friends automatically

    Cons: None really. The GPS has a lot of features that I don't use...making it a touch complicated.

    Having a single device instead of two (GPS & Radio) is very handy. If your friends have Rinos, all you have to do is key up your radio and your coordinates are automatically transmitted to them. As a GPS: Full featured with maps and adequate memory.... Has many features that I don't use, but so do most GPS units. It acquires satellites and locates its position very quickly...as quick as any GPS I've used (8 different models that I can think of from Garmin, Magellan, Lowrance). As a Radio: Works fine and simple to use. There are probably better dedicated radios out there. I know there are worse also. I like that it uses AA batteries (3). When used as a GPS and radio at the same time it will go through a set in one full day of hunting. If you shut off the radio and just use it as a GPS it will go several days. If you just use it as a radio, it will go even longer. I highly recommend that you and your friends all buy Rinos Read more Less
