Alongside scifi "four X" titles such as Master of Orion and Space Empires, the Galactic Civilizations series has been "eXpanding" since the mid1990s. Players seek to create the galaxy's most powerful empire, among dozens of competing civilizations, by developing and applying economic growth, technological advance, military strength, and diplomatic prowess.

Beginning with a homemade shareware version of the game, the Galactic Civilizations series has evolved over the years, and this 2006 edition boasts all of the refinement and sophistication accrued throughout this history.
