I spent the better part of 3 months searching for a digital camera before settling on the Fuji FinePix. In my comparisons, I looked at Sony, Cannon, Minolta, Olympus, and Nikon in addition to the Fuji.Overall, this is a very well built, very easy to ...use camera that takes a very clean picture. It should be noted that on its highest resolution setting, a tripod almost becomes mandatory to guarantee the best picture. Camera Pros:1. GREAT zoom! Fastest, clearest, and easiest to operate zoom I looked at! BIG plus! 6x optical is great. 3x digital is, more or less, unnecessary.2. Screw-on ring adapter for adding a secondary zoom converter, wide-angle lense, or even filters (GREAT plus here!)3. Takes AA bateries. I do a lot of travel and dont want to have to struggle finding specialized batteries. Also, I do a lot of camping, so rechargeable only cameras (Sony!) are pretty much worthless to me (I often dont know when I will encounter a wall-plug to do my recharging). Fuji rated to around 320 shots on a fresh set of standard AA alkalines. I dont know how many shots it could be on Lithium AAs.4. Easy to use! Stable Grip! While it is a bit low on features, the camera is very intuitive and easy to use. I like to take a good pic, but I dont want to screw around with thousands of settings (ala Olympus and Nikon)5. Great feel - feels very solid and has that really cool SLR type look. Yeah yeah, this is very subjective, but at least it FEELS like a camera!6. Theres one other really nice feature I just cant remember, but it would go here!Cons:1. Proprietary memory card is slightly more expensive (Fuji Xd memory) and limited to 128 meg. 2. A little on the boxy side, though it is pretty light.3. Lacks some flexibility and features (such as extended f-stop control or extended manual shutter speed control)4. Not totally a negative, but not really a solid positive either: The viewfinder eyepiece sights through the lens, but not really. Its a digital rendering through the eyepiece that focuses through the lens. As a result, the viewfinder picture isnt as clear as some others, but the picture turns out just fine...Other:1. At 3.3 megapixls, best resolution setting, 1 pic - appx 1.3 megs in size! 2. About 2 seconds between shots. Does not permit Rapid fire or burst shots like the Olympus. Some cameras have a bit of onboard memory that allows for 3-5 rapid fire shots in under a second (though they then take 5 seconds to memorize the pix that were just taken).3. Downloaded 32 megs (25 pix at max setting) in under 60 seconds! WAY faster than my last digital camera.Great camera. If I upgrade from here, it would be a pro-series camera with all the bells and whistles to take truly cust shots. Read more Less

I have only used this camera for a few days. The features and the 6X optical zoom sold me as my camera of choice. As a professionally trained photographer, I used the same criteria that I used to select a 35MM camera. One that had enough features to gi...ve me creative and technical control, yet simple enough for my wife to use without pulling her hair our!I liked the 6X optical zoom feature as most cameras in this price range had 3X optical zoom. I dont give a lot of credence to digital zooms because of how poorly they reder and image. Id rather have 6X optical zoom with no digital zoom than a camera with a 3X optical zoom and a 50X digital zoom because of image degradation. I like the manual feature in that I can at least get aperature control to a degree, though an electronic version of depth of field preview should be possible. I really like the slow synch on the flash to give me control of the lighting balance. The red eye reduction seems to work well. The picture quality is very good. Good color, contrast and resolution. When I used the provided software and displayed my photos is Slide Show mode and the resulting images filled the whole 14.4 laptop display beautifully. 3.2 Mega Pixels seems to have sufficient resolution to very good quality 8X10 prints. If I need higher quality for larger enlargements, I will use my 35MM equipment. The one feature I am not in love with yet, may be its worst feature for me and I believe should be a serious consideration before purchasing. When I first attempted to take photos in modest indoor lighting, I had a hard time seeing the image, whether I was looking through the electronic viewfinder or at the LCD panel. I quickly found the adjustment to turn up the brightness on both displays, but the image was still poor. Though the images were fine I had a difficult time framing my subject in modest light, which I found frustrating. Because of this adjustment, the preview on the LCD was too bright and I ended up scrolling through the menu again to turn the brightness down in order to display the image correctly. Ill be having to use that adjustment frequently in changing light conditions or if I just want to preview my images in low light. Very inconvenient! This camera has a movie mode, but as every digital still camera on the market, I would never buy a digital still camera based on this feature as they dont compare to a digital video camera. This feature is only a convenience and I wont even consider it in the price of the camera. In fact Id rather the manufacturers leave this feature off altogether and and translate this into savings on the price of the camera. Read more Less

    Fujifilm FinePix 3800

This 3.24-megapixel camera takes handsome photos and offers long battery life. The FinePix 3800 is loaded with fancy features: a 6X optical zoom, a 3.24-megapixel sensor and both an LCD screen and an electronic viewfinder (you switch between them by pressing a button on the rear). The camera fits nicely in the hand, with the zoom control sitting right under your thumb--so you can quickly zoom in and take a picture without having to move the camera. Accessing the menu requires two hands, but the on-screen menus are simple and none of the controls require much button pressing. The 3800's image quality was good in our tests, showing accurate colors and generally good contrast, though some of the outdoor test photos appeared a little overexposed. Read more

    Fuji FinePix 3800

The camera delivers excellent image quality with well saturated and properly exposed colors. The flash is powerful for normal situations and did not overexpose close-up shots when using the macro mode. The powerful 6x zoom lens greatly adds to the ""fun factor"" and is a definite reason to consider the 3800. The 2048 x 1536-pixel images will print very good pictures 8x10 even up to 11x14 inch size and when you have quality images that big you can also crop into the scene and make a high quality smaller print. If you're looking for a good digital camera with a strong telephoto and impressive images, the FinePix 3800 is a very good choice. And at $449 for a 3.2 Megapixel imager and 38-228mm (equivalent) lens, its priced right. Read more
