The fifth volume of Universal Canada's Frosh series stumbles along happily in the footsteps of its partying predecessors. Exploding with the sublime ridiculousness of Andrew WK's "Party Hard", the album wastes no time throwing the nearest pencilneck through the beeramid in the corner of your dorm room. The chest bumps continue with high energy tracks from Sum 41 ("Makes No Difference") and Hoobastank ("Crawling in the Dark"), and figures out how to downshift cleanly from Blink182 into the Ramones. If your roommate hasn't already learned the chords to Sublime's "What I Got" on his Ovation, the bleary, beery anthem is conveniently provided here. Frosh, Vol. 5's second half gets a little spotty as it tries to justify programming Ja Rule's plinking "Put It On Me" next to the 80's nugget "Somebody's Watching Me". Of course, in the world of party mix CDs, this sort of move does have some crowd reaction logic. Ice Cube spices things up with the delightfully tacky "You Can Do It", Primal Scream's raucous "Rocks" is sure to please your English foreign exchange student friend. Overall, the fifth volume of Frosh is another solid compilation. There are no real surprises here, and Puddle of Mudd's "Blurry" is unforgivable. But it will keep the party primed while you're sneaking more hooch up the back steps.
