Truly Essential
There's this idea amongst rock'n'roll circles that Elvis' 50s recordings are essential, the 60s are hit and miss and the 70s are almost a total waste. This box set sets the record straight on the 60s, at least. By not including any soundtrack recordings, we see Elvis' evolution in the studio. The acclaimed late 60s Memphis sessions did not come from nowhere. It was a natural progression. This wonderful set presents every track in chronological order as Elvis recorded it. The weakest disc is the third - and it's telling that for many rock artists - this disc would represent the best they could hope to achieve.
