Excellent movie. I loved the way it through in all different theories and kept you guessing all the way through as to who the Ripper was. Stay true to the comic book it was based off of, but held it's own too. Johnny Depp and Heather Graham gave d...ecent performances, though the acting in spots could have been a little better. Anybody who is a fan of Jack the Ripper like I am will definitely like this movie. Read more Less

Pros: johnny depp looked really good and looked good in the bath tub and was a good horror film

Cons: all the blood

This movie was awesome. I would watch it over and over again if it didnt scare me so bad.

It's a classic Johnny Depp performance. Though it varies from the original story you will appreciate the story and overall acting in the film.

Johnny Depp was wonderful. Althought he movie uses a lot of speculation it's done in a way that is enjoyable and believable. The DVD extra's go more into theory and suspects and the lives of the victims. The scenery was taken right from actual photos... and drawings of the crime scenes. So/So movie, could've been much better..

It was great in it's IDEAS and REASONS for the Whitechapel/Jack the Ripper murders, but it should've concentrated MORE on the theory, and explained the inner-workings of the murder(ers) better, instead of focusing so much attention on EVERY SMALL DET...AIL of each of the 5 prostitutes lives. (Was it really important to the story that one of them was a lesbian, and to SHOW that every chance they could?) I'm not gonna wreck the movie for those who haven't seen it, but if it went deeper into the "secret society"(I won't mention WHICH one!), and WHY they operated as they DID, and what motivated them, and was the meaning behind the "society" itself, and why the murders were conducted as they were, it would've been MUCH more interesting. Also, if they'd have concentrated more on the possible repercussions on the monarchy in England, and LESS on the frivoulous aspects, it could've been truly great, if all these things could've been in the movie. It was a LONG movie, and we only really learn ANYTHING in the last 30 minutes or so in a movie that is over 2 hours LONG. I think it would've been so much better if they stuck to the more interesting facts about the "secret society" and their inner-workings, and who and WHAT they are really all about,(to this very day!), instead you just get them talking about things that are kind of a mystery, you just don't "get" WHY they're involved and what they're ABOUT, except that they held positions of power in England and were very involved with monarchy, although the Queen seemed oblivious to what they were really about! DUH! She was really smart! It would've been interesting to find out their motivations behind taking on such a lovely task! It could've been fascinating, instead it only made me want MORE answers! The filmmakers intentions were good, they just put too much "filler" and unimportant information in it. Glad we rented it instead of going to the theatre and paying too much money to see it there. I would've felt gypped! My husband agrees! As he said,"what was all the HYPE about with this movie? Heather Graham and Johnny Depp?" Sadly, I agree with him. Maybe they could re-make or re-edit it with more of the gritty, informative stuff, and I'm not talking about the gore, which was really minimal. The blood and gore was pretty much hype, too, sorry gore-lovers! Not a complete waste of time, but it definitely could've been better. (I fell asleep watching it the first time I put it into the VCR, it was pretty slow-going! As I said, only in the last 30 minutes or so did it get really interesting, and even that could've been more in-depth and informative). Read more Less

NOT JUST A SLASHER FLICK!

This movie was done very well. Is it gory? The use of blood and mangled flesh was held at a minimum considering the subject matter. The Ripper committed brutal murders; the film warrants the use of gore to get the brutality across, but in no way ...was it over done. Being a student and practitioner of the psychic arts myself, I thought Johnny Depp's portrayal of "psychic detective" Aberline was dead on accurate. A flow of pictures is pretty much how it works for a lot of psychics, and Depp didn't get all "tranced-out" and disconnected from the scene. That type of psychic visioning only happens in the movies...the bad ones. An interesting and plausible spin on one of the biggest mysteries in true crime history. Read more Less

Once again Johnny Depp proves what an excellent actor he is. One might think that this movie is just gore. But it's much more then that. Anyone who know's anything will love this movie.

Johnny Depp played a crappy part well in a bad production. Overall, I kinda enjoyed it because i love him and strange movies. But I would not buy it and if I had something better to do than sit through this again I would.
