Stan fan appreciates the new release
, July 28, 2003Reviewer: Alex D - See all Alex D's reviewsLoved the CD--it's 75 minutes of Stan's work, minimally produced (as it was early work) so it features his voice well. There are passages in the lyrics and music that will be familiar as they were incorporated into later songs, but plenty of new material to make this worth buying. -
New Album Displays Rogers' Diversity!
, November 23, 1999Reviewer: fsteuart - See all fsteuart's reviewsFans of Canada's great musical icon, Stan Rogers, are in for a treat with the long-awaited release of "From Coffee House to Concert Hall", the last installment of unreleased material made public by Fogarty's Cove Music.
Ariel Rogers, Stan's wife and owner of Fogarty's Cove, along with producer Paul Mills, have done an exceptional job in restoring this collection of studio takes and cassette recordings of Stan's music during his career. The album spans nearly ten years of material and convinces us once again that the work of our friend Stan was indeed as uniquely Canadian as it was miraculous in scope of emotion and style.
My favoutite tracks are Guysborough Train, Take it from Day to Day, and The Puddler's Tale. Stan's country roots appear on a few tracks as well as versions of songs writen by colleagues.
Every Stan Rogers collection is incomplete without this album and it only creates a further craving for more. Thanks to Ariel & Paul for this one! ...

Pro Reviews: From Coffee House To Concert Hall
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews This generous collection of concert performances has been eagerly awaited by Stan Rogers' devoted cult following, and it will be especially welcomed by those who never got to see the legendary Canadian folk singer in person before his untimely death in 1983. The majority of the songs are originals, most of them dealing with themes of family, friendship, and life in the Maritime provinces of Canada; the seafaring plaint "Take It from Day to Day" and the aching "Love Letter" are typical, both in their tone and in the sophisticated simplicity of the writing. There are a few traditional numbers as well, most notably a superb and moving rendition of "Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her" recorded at a benefit concert in Chicago, on which all of the other performers contribute harmonies on the chorus. Other performances feature Rogers alone with his own guitar, or, more frequently, accompanied by his brother Garnet and two or three other musicians. The sound quality is generally quite good, but even where the source tapes are in less than ideal condition, the musical quality more than makes up for the subpar sound. - Rick Anderson, All Music Guide |
