Two of the most innovative artrockers of the 1970s, King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and exRoxy Music ambient pioneer/production wizard Brian Eno first teamed up in 1973, just as Eno had gone solo and the second incarnation of King Crimson was beginning to fall apart. The two recorded an album, No Pussyfooting, that combined layered, atmospheric Fripp guitar with tape loops and various sonic treatments, creating a lush, ambient sound that foreshadowed new age music. In 1975, Fripp and Eno recorded the followup, Evening Star, which employed a similar approach. While the two never recorded together as Fripp/Eno again, they could be found together as session guitarist and producer, respectively, on much of the late '70s' most exciting experimental music, including works by David Bowie, Talking Heads, and Peter Gabriel. In 1994, a compilation entitled The Essential Fripp Eno gathered highlights from the two aforementioned albums, as well as some previously unreleased material.
