Synopsis: Freedomland (2006)

Late one night in a working class New Jersey suburb, a bloodied woman staggers mute and dazed into the emergency room at the Dempsy Medical Center. After treatment for shock and hysteria, Brenda Martin (Julianne Moore) recounts to Dempsy police detective Lorenzo Council (Samuel L. Late one night in a working class New Jersey suburb, a bloodied woman staggers mute and dazed into the emergency room at the Dempsy Medical Center. After treatment for shock and hysteria, Brenda Martin (Julianne Moore) recounts to Dempsy police detective Lorenzo Council (Samuel L. Jackson) -- a horrific tale of being carjacked on the isolated strip of undeveloped land that divides Dempsy's urban housing projects from the blue collar town of Gannon, where she lives. She claims she was forced out of her car by a black man, but during the interrogation Council senses he's not getting the whole story. Only after hours of questioning does Brenda finally break down and confess that her four-year-old son, Cody, was asleep in the back seat of the stolen car. Led by activist Karen Collucci (Edie Falco), members of the communities of Dempsy and Gannon unite in a search for the missing child, but the criminal investigation into the alleged kidnapping by a suspect who is presumed to be a local from the projects soon ignites long-simmering racial tensions between the two towns.

    Stay with it if you can!

    Pros: You keep wondering!!

    Cons: Some scenes are nerve-racking!

    Can i give two and a half stars?? I finally got to watch the entire movie today after watching the first few scenes the other night i was going to give up on it. I am glad i stuck with it though. The movie left me thinking about what the point really... was. Two main themes were running at the same time. First, Julie Ann Moore's character which disturbed me greatly. I found many flaws with her character and found myself not feeling sorry for her at all! Then there was the subplot of racial tension between the police and the black people of "the projects". Samuel Jackson is caught in the middle between his so-called victim and the people he cares about. I found myself really bothered by the first few scenes -- not bothered in a bad way, nothing gross or violent, but the camera-work, the characters and the dark overtone of the setting made me want to go take a tranquelizer! Half-way through, with Eddie Falcos character coming into play, i was calmer and enjoying it more. This is a hard movie for me to recommend -- is it worth seeing?? I think so, if you can get past the first few frazzling scenes. Read more Less

    Pros: Good acting

    Cons: none

    Don't want to say much that will ruin the movie, but if you liked "A Time to Kill" then you would like this movie too. Julianne Moore did very well with her character, and in my opinion should be nominated for some kind of acting award ...for it. This movie has you guessing and trying to figure it out most of the way through. I loved it and plan on watching it several more times. Read more Less
