Great CD by those kids across the Atlant

When I first heard the rumbling of this group's latest album, I didn't think that it could live up to the hype, like most things nowadays. I mean being number one in England is one thing but being critically acclaimed as well. Usually, those instance...s are rare in this age of prefab rock stars. Needless to say, I was seriously doubtful. But once I heard ''Burn Baby Burn'', the hype paled in comparison to how great the CD actually sounded. ''Burn Baby Burn'', ''Walking Barefoot'' and ''Pacific Palisades'' are great power pop punk music (think punk Beach boys or an English Everclear). For a change of pace, ''Sometimes'' ''There's A Star'' and ''Candy'' are heavenly with lush orchestrations and haunting melodies. As the music played, I kept wondering why this disc didn't warrant a simultaneous release in the US when it was released overseas in 2001. There is not one filler song on this entire CD. The included Extras are pretty good. The Ash Video Editor allows the user to create their own video compilation to their songs using video clips as well as still images from their recent tours. Loads of replay value, that's for sure. The DVD is modest in regards to navigation but is chock full of great eye candy like the ''World Domination'' Tour documentary that runs about 20 minutes, the four videos from this CD, two live songs from their tour of Japan as well as three B-side songs set to images from all things Ash. The total package provides the listener with both visual and aural stimulation that goes beyond the normal CD release. This CD left me with such an impression that I'm going to track down and buy their previous releases. It is that good. In this age of ready-made, disposable pop stars and overly produced songs, it's nice to see and hear a band that truly rocks period. Read more Less

    Ear orgasmic!

Free All Angels is one awesome CD that just makes me want to get up and BOOGIE!!! Not all of the songs are as upbeat as Burn Baby Burn and Cherry Bomb (two of my favorites on the CD), there are also mellow songs such as Candy and Someday (a cover of ...the song that goes... someday over the rainbow da da da)Ash is quite different from the typical pop-punkness that is Blink 182, Good Charlotte, and those Drive-Thru bands.... its punk rock with a new twist.... This is a happy kick, with big guitars and a big attack and onrushing energy, and it's no tedious retro punk record, either. Seven years out of high school, and high a-top the British charts in their teens, the 20-something Irish boys (and English girl) haven't lost any of their pop (in any sense of the word). No, they've stepped it up a notch, while adding layers to a post-Nirvana, post-Jesus Mary Chain firewall that sounds modern. Most of all, leader Tim Wheeler's sunny melodies, so rare for music this aggressive and harsh, come to him so unequivocally that he should have to donate the excess he wrote for this LP to some public trust. Free All Angels' high-action burners would make anyone want to sing: big wall-bangers like the utterly panting, lascivious "Cherry Bomb," the 1964 Beach Boys-inspired "Pacific Palisades," the dashed love of "Nicole," the bravado of "World Domination," the Undertones-esque "Walking Barefoot," the nasty edge of "Shark," and most of all, this LP's out and... out bomb, the well-titled "Burn Baby Burn." In the spirit of Hüsker Dü, China Drum, Compulsion, and The Replacements, these songs are hard-hitting yet in-the-pocket -- and Ash adds its trademark youthful enthusiasm, shining out of these grooves like a signal flare. And to keep Free All Angels from getting samey, they add some full-on dream pop in the single "Shining Light," and some full-on lull-out in the sublime, strings-comely "Someday," "There's a Star," and the demure, purring "Sometimes." And as a change-up, there's the way-kinky, dance-groove rump shaker, "Submission," with drummer Rick "Rock" McMurray and bassist Mark Hamilton pounding the funky rock groove like a sped-up Stone Roses' Mani and Reni. These flavors insure that the bursting crank-up of the bangers are that much more electrifying. Ash are even more hot rod now with more experience. They're a great rock 'n' roll band by any measure. Biography

Ash

Ireland's punk-pop trio Ash first formed in 1989 when childhood mates Tim Wheeler and Mark Hamilton got guitars for Christmas and established the metal act, Vietnam. Nothing more than something for kicks, Vietnam switched to Ash in 1992 as Wheeler (guitar/vocals), Hamilton (bass), and Rick "Rock" McMurray (drums) aimed to be something more serious. They shared a love fo... Read more
