Franz Joseph Haydn was born March 31, 1732 in Rohrau, Austria. At the age of six, he was sent to Hainburg, on the Danube, to study music. Haydn's talents came to the attention of Georg Reutter, kapellmeister at St. Stephen's cathedral in Vienna, who arranged for Haydn to relocate and sing in his choir. When his voice changed, Haydn was forced to leave St. Stephen's and embark on the uncertainty of a career as a freelance musician. He supported himself by playing, teaching, and making contacts...
