Pro Reviews: Folk Songs from the Country

  • All Music Guide

Danny Dill is better known as a songwriter than a singer, but he recorded for a few labels in the late '50s and early '60s before making his second album, Folk Songs from the Country. The high point of the album is Dill's rendition of "Long Black Veil," the modern classic he co-wrote with Marijohn Wilkin. Also of interest is Dill's recording of "Partners," an original that gave Jim Reeves a Top 5 hit in 1959. The album emphasizes Dill's gift for songwriting; he wrote a few songs with famous partners such as Wayne P. Walker and Mel Tillis, but composed most on his own. His voice is plain but capable, and the light folk-flavored backing suits Dill's narrative style. None of the songs match the greatness of "Long Black Veil" (few rival "Partners," for that matter), but Folk Songs from the Country is worthwhile for offering an extended journey into the mind of this talented writer.
